90mm Macro Elmar/Macro Adapter-M

I'm wondering if anyone has has used this combination.

I'm a big fan of macro photography and normally use a wireless tethered D2X with their 105mm VR lens and ring flash but it's huge - a real monster.

I was thinking about this pair for the M8 but I think it's pushing M-photography out of its comfort zone into an area where it is less than ideal, the problems of course being that the close focussing leads to extremely shallow depth of field and inaccurate framing, not to mention the problems of illuminating the subject properly.

Any experience out there? Has Leica ever sold one of these things?

Mark,

the 90mem works extremely well within its limitations. I have the close up attachment and prefer it to lugging around a dslr for the occasional closeup.

I have some mem shots here Gallery Folder

I like the macro adapter as well. It's easy to use and gives a simple solution for close ups with a M camera.

Mark, I have just obtained the 90mm f4 Elmar and the macro adaptor M and I attach one of the frames from my first film taken only last week. M7, 90mm f4 Macro Elmar, Macro M adaptor, Agfa RSX 100 II.

Jonathan, I really like your fish shot and leaves (gallery selection). They are stunning examples of what this new lens can do.

While in Spain recently I thought how useful the lens would be even without its macro adapter. I believe it is still capable of good close up photography without the adapter. What are you views on the use of the lens as a straight 90mm?

I find this a very useful lens -- one of the few I usually take with me on trips. Very small and light. It seems to me to work fine as a straight 90mm lens. Here's an example:

It's also good with the adapter (which is very light).

David,

the lens is fabulous as a straight 90 (albeit f4)

Thought I would add a portrait dne with the 90 mem. The detail is brutal, but you get the idea. This is a shot of the infamous Al Kaplan from Miami.

Jonathan, what a character! Did you escape unharmed?
