Talus Posted July 16, 2007 Share #1 Posted July 16, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I was in NYC this past weekend with the intentions to sell my Nikon 12-24 to Adorama, take the money and run. Well....it didn't quite turn out like that. They were willing to give me 70% of their resale value for the lens, then 75% because I constructively conveyed how displeased I was with the inital figure. Then I was told that if I was looking for some equipment, say a lens for example, they could give me a significant discount. Well... I took a look at the 90mm cron and then the elmarit and after seeing how freaking huge the cron is I went with the elmarit. I shoot low light mostly, but it's more important to me to have a lightweight and less bulky lens than have the extra stop. So they pressed a few keys, called the man upstairs and when all was said and done it came out to an even swap. I shoot friends, mostly candid, and I figured having a lens with a little more reach would let me take pictures a little more inconspicuously. I haven't gone out with it yet, but I hope to have a chance to really play around with it sometime soon. Thought I'd share. btw, it's a 32xxxxx, made in canada model. rubberized folding hood. Excellent condition. Any comments about this one?

simonpg Posted July 26, 2007 Share #2 Posted July 26, 2007 Well done Talus. You will get lots of use from it. My 90mm is a favourite and as you say, the Elmarit version is so easy to take out with you and to hold at slow speeds. I use mine a lot and have many 90mm images on my website. gareth_c Posted July 26, 2007 Share #3 Posted July 26, 2007 I look forward to some of your samples. I want to grab a 90mm at some point but its a real grey area of knowledge for me, but then most things are
cmogi10 Posted July 29, 2007 Share #4 Posted July 29, 2007 I've used a 90mm Elmar for a while and just ordered a ver 3 cron. I have no problem with the bulk and will look forward to comparing the two len's when I get the cron. (Maybe tommorow! *crosses fingers*)
innerimager Posted July 29, 2007 Share #5 Posted July 29, 2007 Congratulations Talus. I love my 90 elmarit, very reliable, delivers a high rate of keepers from focus/color point of view. Sean Reid is working on a review of many 90s, (he is using mine for the purpose), I am sure the elmarit will stack up very well against the others, and it's size, fast focus, and weight gives a great advantage. Now it may not replace the 12-24 functioally, you'll have to just get very far away! best....Peter
lars_bergquist Posted July 30, 2007 Share #6 Posted July 30, 2007 I understand that you have gotten yourself a second version Tele-Elmarit-M 1:2.8/90 (check that on the front ring), 1973–1989. Congrats. It is very good at f:4, very good indeed at 5.6. Slightly low contrast and just a bit softish in the corners at 2.8, but useable. And if you have an M8, it will recognize it as 90mm even without coding! With a weight of c. 225 g it is an ideal jacket-pocket-walk-around short tele. You will love it. The lens takes two kinds of filters. a) E39mm screw-in, with the hood screwed-in on top, and Series 5.5 filters which are held in the hood by a screw-in retainer ring. If these items are included and in good shape, you can use them, but the screw filters are just as convenient. – Also, the lens, like all 90 and 135mm lenses which take E39 filters, can use the dear old 12575 hood, which is even more compact as it reverses on the lens for transport. It debuted in 1958 but Leica does still sell it as a spare part as the 90mm Macro-Elmar uses it. A little rubber conditioning fluid on the original hood will postpone the day when you need a replacement however. luigi bertolotti Posted July 30, 2007 Share #7 Posted July 30, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Excellent buy for M8: I have an old one (chrome) and it's an absolute favorite with me: sharp, stable and its compactness is a value in using.
