MM DNG files Part 7 Seascape

Hi There

Grandpa was easy - this one is more of a challenge

It was taken on a windy day on the Suffolk coast with the Wide Angle Tri-Elmar - it's perhaps not as sharp as it might have been, handheld in the wind.

This is my take on it - certainly it was more work than any of the other files

Thanks Jono. This will be an interesting one to look at. I seem to recall you stating that this was shot 'bare' - i.e. without any colour filters?

HI Ian

Yes - that's right - I don't have filters for my WATE - but still, I don't think the final image is too shoddy.

N.B. Apologies for the dirty sensor - that is a bit shoddy - still, it all adds to the fun!

Yes, I was just looking at all the dust spots.:) Dare I also say how unwowed I am by the lens – I was expecting to see a lot more detail when pixel peeping at 100%? Is that Southwold lighthouse in the distance?

Jono,

Thanks for the effort on all this and the sharing. Here's my very quick take on it, using one of the LR4 B&WE presets (red filter, just for the contrast) and a few global adjustments. You've made me brush up on LR, which I still don't like and prefer the user interface of Aperture. However, as a raw developer I find RPP the best, and LR4 somewhat better than Aperture, but neither even close to RPP.

Again, I am impressed with the tonal range and detail of these files. Out of the camera they are very flat, but that means an excellent base for adjustments.

Here is my version - a sligtly less "heavy handed" contrast adjustment. Clouds should never go completely black or completely white, in my opinion.

Added a little duotone to preserve highlight details in the clouds.

I have to say that I still would like colour channels to work with while converting to B&W.

But that's just me.

Here is another, less heavy-handed interpretation of the seascape, which I am putting up because it was so easy to do: I only applied the Tri-X preset in Silver Efex, in which I eliminated the gran simulation.

I used the gradient tool and curves in ACR to get the tones and contrast I wanted. The sharpening tools I left untouched but I took clarity up to 40. In Photoshop proper I gave it a very slight levels adjustment and a touch of smart sharpen.

It’s a beautiful photo. Thanks for sharing it!

HI Ian

Actually the lens is fantastic - I'm not sure what I did wrong here, but it was surely something (I quite agree it isn't wowed sharp). maybe it simply was focused to close (or too far) - it was incredibly windy.

I suspect that the real problem was too good a lunch at the Anchor!

. . . and yes, it is Southwold lighthouse you see in the distance.

Upped structure and contrast.

Again, thank you very much, Jono for providing the files. Here is my interpretation using Alien Skin Exposure 3 and some dodging and burning.

Upped structure and contrast.

I won't ask how you made your rendition, but I utterly failed to make something as compelling, especially the rain falling in the distance. Good work. Thank you.

Jono: I appreciate the breaking mini-wave that complements the composition in general. It took me into the photo.

I just have to say it is truly appreciated what you have done here in sharing all of these images. Kudos to you many times over.

It's amazing what makes wonkers go bonkers. I, of course, speak only of myself.

Actually you have cost me big since I have preordered both-the MM and the new 50.
