LensRentals.com - Buy a Leica 50mm f/1.4 Summilux ASPH - New in Box

They are charging $4500 for it which is kind of surprising (they have historically not sold lenses above list). I believe they are an authorized dealer. I bought the 35mm Summilux FLE through them about 6 months ago for list.

I have no affiliation with this company.

They won't remain an authorized dealer for long if they make a habit of this

So whats the deal with selling above list? Adorama has been selling demo stock above list and digitalrev have been selling online way above list. Is this allowed or not?

I sent an email with a copy of the page to Leica NJ asking if they endorse authorized dealers charging over list. The last thing we need is authorized dealers fleecing customers.

The problem is that there are many customers taking advantage of the current pricing situation/supply shortage and making larger profits on re-sale.

I emailed Leica yesterday to ask what Leica's policy was regarding dealers selling new lenses over list and received an reply from Leica's VP of Operations, Ray Tomeseli this morning. He wrote:

"I contacted this dealer and they confirmed this listing was an error that they planned on fixing. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions."

Interesting that the lens is now "no longer available".

I found a 50mm Summilux at Quality Camera Company in Georgia today. They're also an authorized dealer, but wanted $4,000 for the lens--$300 over list price. I called Leica to ask if this sort of price gouging is allowed, to which they responded that there is no strict policy against it, but that the practice was frowned upon. The Leica rep called the dealer to discuss the issue. I called back 15 minutes later, and it turned out they had just moments ago sold the camera to a "local resident."

I would expect a $4,000+ 50mm Lux from Georgia to show up on eBay any day now, if anyone's interested.

Thanks, another dealer to avoid.

This story took an interesting twist today. The $4500 50mm Summilux was withdrawn from sale after Leica called the dealer.

This afternoon on stevehuffphoto.com:

Lensrentals.com, a site sponsor e-mail me and asked if I wanted to buy an extra 50 Summilux ASPH they had in their office. I already own one so I said no, but I know about 500 others that do! So they said they wanted to offer this lens to my readers since there are so many looking for this amazing lens.

SteveHuffPhoto.com Exclusive Deal – Leica 50 Summilux ASPH, $3600 | STEVE HUFF PHOTOS

At $3600 and now represented as 9/10 used (instead of $4500) the lens sold in 2 minutes.

As I mentioned earlier, I previously had great experience with this dealer buying the impossible-to-get 35mm Summilux FLE from them at list 6 months ago. They got greedy this time around.

wow, what a turn of events. the internet is a small place - something dealers should be well aware of...you'd think

can the form make a section or list of dealers charging above list, to refer to at a later date when more stock is available or when a member is looking to buy new ? thanks, i wish to boycott such dealers as i am sure many others here are !!!!!!!!!! how can a dealer make money with out stock to sell ? and LEICA is losing profits from the purchase of over priced used gear i do not get it , the bubble will bust , but all those extras dollars are gone too , sorry to rant on.

thanks and happy shooting to all

Yesterday that lens in silver was available at Colorfoto in Lisbon. They have ordered a black one, for a client, but after waiting months they received the silver version (Leica mistake).

It's a very good shop that you can trust (I buy all my photo gear from them).
