dslang Posted January 25, 2007 Share #1 Posted January 25, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Allo I'm new to this forum. I'd love to own a leica, but alas, being a university students has its limitations. However I was attracted to this forum by the level of maturity and passion for photography here, seems to be far higher than most forums on the net. As a result I figured this would be a good place to ask this question- I recently bough Annie Leibovitz's "A Photographer's Life." It's the first photobook that I've ever bought, and I am completey addicted. I've been looking for some other books, especially street photography, but they are hard to find in local stores, which means I'm going to start looking online. However it's almost impossible to know what's good and what isn't. For example, I don't want to spend money on a book that looks nice on Amazon's description but actually has crap printing that just bastardizes someone like Cartier-Bresson's work. He also seems to have a lot of books on Amazon and it is difficult to decide on one. Long story short, can anyone recommend good photo books? Any type of photography is good really, but street would be the best. Price isn't too huge of a factor, I plan to keep these for the rest of my life. As such, quality of paper/printing/photography ranks above cost. The bigger the pages the better. Thanks! -David

peter_n Posted January 26, 2007 Share #3 Posted January 26, 2007 Street? I would strongly recommend Robert Doisneau: Paris published by Flammarion in 2005. Beautifully printed and full of wit, it is a wonderful exposition of his art. £23.10 at Amazon UK.
Guest Bernd Banken Posted January 26, 2007 Share #4 Posted January 26, 2007 Hi, my recommendation is: "Gilles Caron" Pour La Liberté De La Presse from: by Reporters Sans Frontieres (Reporters without frontiers) M03981 €8,90 Gilles Caron is not so well known as R. Capa but his photographs about the students riots in Paris or about the war in Cambodia and Vietnam are very impressive. As many of the reporters within the fihgts he was killed by the Red Khmer. After viewing the pics you will be addicted to Kodak TRI-X. I guess the book is not so easy to get it's published by the organization "Reporters sans Frontiers" an organization which supports reporters and relatives of killed reporters. Here is a link I found: http://www.amazon.fr/Gilles-Caron-Pour-liberté-presse/dp/2915536406 With every book a certain amount of money will be gained for support. Very impressive pics of a wide range of the work of Mr. Caron! Regards Bernd
christoph_d Posted January 26, 2007 Share #5 Posted January 26, 2007 Dear David, With respect to HCB I would recommend two books: "Henri Cartier-Bresson, The man the image & the world", ISBN 0500542678. A very comprehensive overview of his work, excellent to read and study again and again. "An inner silence, the protraits of HCB", ISBN 0500543178. Dealing with the portrait work of HCB, I almost prefer it to the other due to it's focus on one subject. Finally I'd recommend: "End Time City", ISBN 3-908247136, by Michael Ackerman. Not typical street photography, but good to widen the horizon. Good reading, C.
earleygallery Posted January 26, 2007 Share #6 Posted January 26, 2007 For more contemporary street photography take a look at iN-PUBLiC | The home of street photography I find that Art gallery shops are a good source - depending if you have a good gallery nearby. TimF Posted January 26, 2007 Share #8 Posted January 26, 2007 What a question! Just a few I'm very fond of then... Henri Cartier-Bresson Scrapbook (bearing in mind that "the man, the image..." has been mentioned already. This one is a fab record of HCBs early years, from the early 1930s to 1946) Robert Frank "The Americans" Homer Sykes "On The Road Again" Roger Mayne "Photographs" Willy Ronis "Belleville-Menilmontant (try Amazon France for this one) Helen Levitt "Here And There" Stephen Gill "Hackney Wick" Anders Petersen "Cafe Lemnitz" Martin Parr "The Last Resort" Ian Berry "The English" (out of print, but there may be an anthology of Ian's work) Denis Thorpe "On Home Ground" (a collection of photos by one of the finest British press photographers ever, IMHO) Also worth looking at are "Bystander: A History of Street Photography" by Colin Westerbeck & Joel Meyerowitz, and "Young Meteors: British Photojournalism 1957-65" by Martin Harrison. There are legions of good books, but that'll do for now.
bill Posted January 26, 2007 Share #9 Posted January 26, 2007 "Shots from the Hip" by "Johnny Stiletto". Long out of print but it turns up on eBay every so often. For me this is the best modern street photography book. Regards, Bill
garyp Posted January 26, 2007 Share #10 Posted January 26, 2007 Any books by Ernst Haas, but especially "The Creation" which was a landmark in color photography. Also, Eliot Porter, Eliot Eliofson, and William Eggleston's books are worthwhile, IMO. You may try a local library [if you're near a large town] and look at their selections. They usually have a good variety of authors [photographers]. Life magazine had a interesting series of hardback books in the 70's which featured a lot of popular photographers' work. dslang Posted January 26, 2007 Author Share #11 Posted January 26, 2007 Thanks everyone! I'll start looking into it. Bernd Banken: Thanks for the recommendation, I do actually have this particular book of Gilles Caron's work. For some reason though I've always thought of it as a magazine type portfolio and never as a book. Strange how things work sometimes. The pictures in it are absolutely fantastic though. I've learnt much from his photos.
jelderfield Posted January 26, 2007 Share #12 Posted January 26, 2007 Not street photo, which is what I do, but one of the best B&W books IMHO is "Telex Iran" by Gilles Peress. Great online resources for books are: photo-eye | fine photography books and photography galleries Aperture Foundation | Home Dashwood Books Cheers, Jonathan Elderfield Photography (I also recommend "Living Under South Street by Jonathan Elderfield, photo-eye | JONATHAN ELDERFIELD - Living Under South Street.)
