Advertisement Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 Hi armandopa, Take a look here Vario elmar 28/70. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
rsh Posted July 16, 2010 Share #2 Posted July 16, 2010 Optically, I think it is on par with the 35-70 f2.8 Vario Elmarit, which I have owned in the past. The advantage to me is the extended zoom range, which is more important to me than the faster speed at the long end of the zoom. If I want to travel with two cameras, I take an M9, 35 Summicron and 75 Summicron or only a 50 Summilux and an R9 DMR, 19 Elmarit, 28-90 and a 180- Apo Elmarit. bocaburger Posted July 16, 2010 Share #3 Posted July 16, 2010 rsh I think you might be confusing the 28-90 with the 28-70 he asked about. I bought both versions of the 28-70 secondhand on trial to check differences, the plan being to keep the better and send the other back. I ended up sending them both back. They were sharp enough (Sigma is no slouch in the lens department), but the distortion was too much for my taste. Barrel distortion at 28mm wasn't as bad as pincushion distortion beginning at around 50mm and getting progressively worse by 70mm where it was quite pronounced and invaded far into the frame not just at the edge. Some say the 2 versions differ slightly optically, but definitely not in the distortion area, they were equally bad. If you don't mind pronounced distortion or don't mind having to correct it before printing (which involves some cropping in the end), then it's a nice sharp contrasty lens. gvaliquette Posted July 16, 2010 Share #4 Posted July 16, 2010 bocaburger is right. The lens is sharp enough, but the distortion is terribly intrusive. I since bought the 28-90 Vario-Elmar-R and the 28-70 now sits on the shelf! Guy
rsh Posted July 16, 2010 Share #5 Posted July 16, 2010 Ya'll are right. My 57 year old eyes are not what they once were. I looked too quickly and saw 28-90 and not 28-70. The 28-70 is not on par with any of the Leica short range zooms - 35-70 Vario Elmar, 35-70 Vario Elmarit and 28-90 Vario Elmarit.
tobey bilek Posted July 17, 2010 Share #6 Posted July 17, 2010 Sharp with a lot of distortion. I rarely use mine. The 35 70 4.0 is my zoom of choice and a decent compromise from fixed lenses.
holmes Posted July 17, 2010 Share #7 Posted July 17, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'll second that on the 35-75. It has an aspherical lens. Putts wonders why Leica did not designate it as such. With that f 4 and my 80-200 F 4, plus my macro I can cover a lot of territory.
