Back from Paris- Nice Travel Kit

All,

I just got back from Paris and I was very pleased with the travel kit I threw together. My M7 wore a new style 50/2.8 elmar most of the time with a 90/4 Collapsible Summicron making an appearance now and then. The combo really worked well and I was very pleased with the results on Agfa Ultra 100 and Kodak 400UC. It felt a little "retro" using both collapsible lenses which added to the fun.

This combo was small and light, super for some long hot days. The Noct got very little use except late at night. I also had my Ricoh GR Digital along for wider shots when needed.

I'll post a few shots once I have a chance to scan this weekend. One note to fellow travellers- I had my film done at "Photo Service", a chain in Paris, and they did an excellent job.

The new forum is off to a great start and I, for one, am happy we all still have this outlet for exchanging info with one another.

Have a great weekend.

Kent

Never had the pleasure of visiting the City of Lights and we do look forward to seeing some of your shots. Thanks for your report.

But how can one "do" any European city without a 28mm lens or wider in your kit?

My current much loved duo of lenses for such a trip: Summicron 75/2 and Biogon 25/2.8.

I had a Tri-Elmar and enjoyed using it but it was just too slow @ f4. (I also sold the T-E to finance my Summicron 75 which I'll never sell!)

I fully recognize that's it's all in the eye of the beholder ... er, shooter, I mean.

J.W. (a bit formal don't you think? :-), I lived in Paris for 2 years or so and used a 35mm Summicron for about 80% of the shots I took, other than that the main lenses were 50mm - Summicron and Nocti. I guess it depends on the type and style of photography that an individual practices.

This is perhaps a bit off topic but is there a 25mm/f2.8? I am currently looking for a 28 but I never thought of a 25mm. Could you please clarify? Thanks.

Uwe,

Zeiss has both now: 25mm and 28mm f/ 2.8 lenses in M mount. The Zeiss accessory viewfinder has frames for both and is better than any other accessory v/f I've ever used. The Zeiss v/f is pricey but worth it.

I got the 25/Biogon because I don't need a new 28mm: my old 28/Canon screwmount-via-adapter refuses to go quietly. I'm still loving the images the Canon lens delivers even though it is getting cranky, mechanically speaking and is now hard to smoothly focus. The Biogon was also cheaper than the Leica 24/Elmarit which I did borrow and used for one day in San Francisco last year.

Lastly, I prefer the slightly more compact size of the Biogon over the larger Elmarit. This is especially true when the recommended lens hood is attached.

One downer for the Zeiss lens: the lens cap supplied by Ziess is hard (for me) to remove since I have large fingers. I replaced it with a screw-in metal lens cap and couldn't be happier. (Lens hood must always be removed.)

Hope this helps. Check out the Zeiss websote in your country for more info.

Actually something wider than a 50mm is pretty important at times. I decided to leave my 35 Summicron at home and I used my Ricoh GR Digital for wider shots (it's a fixed 28mm). All in all, it worked out well.

During my last trip there I actually used my 135mm quite a bit, compressing scenes pretty effectively. I thought the 90 would be a bit more useful this time and it was. A 75 would be interesting to try.

Anyway, what a city for photographers. I live in San Francisco which also has it's photo opportunities but Paris is just beautiful, as are the women :)
