bobkatz Posted October 21, 2009 Share #1 Posted October 21, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Friends: Playing around with M3 recently CLAd,(past year), with my 50Cron DR with IROOA hood, I noticed a point of light on my photos, in same position, same with the elmarit 135/2.8, but no all frames at all. I looked for a curtain leakage but can see nothing... Any advices will be appreciated... Photos with no manipulation, just downsized... Best Bob. earleygallery Posted October 21, 2009 Share #3 Posted October 21, 2009 I would suggest that this is a pinhole in one of the shutter curtains. It can happen if you leave a lens facing direct sunlight, it acts like a magnifying glass and burns a hole in the fabric, or it can also happen just through wear/age. Remove the lens, open the back and shine a very bright light into the lens mouth. Look carefully from the back to see if you can see the point of light coming through either of the curtains, cocked and uncocked shutter.
dpattinson Posted October 21, 2009 Share #4 Posted October 21, 2009 Agreed, looks like a hole in the shutter.
adan Posted October 22, 2009 Share #5 Posted October 22, 2009 A shutter hole is the likeliest suspect - but - way back when, when I got my first M4-2, I had a similar dot show up intermittently. Checked the shutter - no hole. After carefully analysing when the dot showed up and when it didn't, I finally figured out that it was always on the last frame of a series of pictures - the frame that was wound on and then sat for a while bridging the gap between the film rails and the takeup spool. Tracked down a leak around the shaft of the little "R" lever on the front, which leaked light like a cathedral window down through the camera onto the film. Very faint, but enough to build up a fogged spot if the same frame sat there for several hours or days. A burn hole in the rubber/silk shutter curtain will show up as a black pinhole surrounded by a brown charred area. A simple age failure of the rubberizing may be very hard to see unless you take off the lens, and then look through the shutter from the back to see light against the black interior. Remember to check both curtains.

earleygallery Posted October 24, 2009 Share #7 Posted October 24, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Don't forget the hole will be in the opposite position on the shutter than on your photos shown here, and I doubt you'll see the hole unless you shine a very bright light into the lens throat, in a darkish room. I'm not sure about DIY repairs. I have seen people mend cloth shutters with a small piece of lightproof tape but I'm not sure how advisable that is. I don't think replacing a curtain is that expensive to do however.
