gesper Posted November 24, 2006 Share #1 Posted November 24, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) I was wondering if anyone has tried using a Nikon SB-800 with the M8. I already own one that I use with my D200. Most of my shooting with the M8 will be available light, but I still would like to know if and how it would work with the SB-800. The SB-800 has a manual mode, so I am less concerned about the automatic functions, but I want to be sure there is no electronic mismatch that might fry the camera. Advertisement Posted November 24, 2006 Posted November 24, 2006 Hi gesper, Take a look here SB800 and M8? . I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
marknorton Posted November 24, 2006 Share #2 Posted November 24, 2006 They work fine together.
herbkell Posted November 24, 2006 Share #3 Posted November 24, 2006 I have also used the Nikon SC17 off flash cord (in this case with a Leica 24D) and it works fine so off camera flash is possible (except as I have found out you really need three hands to do off camera flash on a manual focus camera!) Stan Raucher Posted November 24, 2006 Share #5 Posted November 24, 2006 Mark, Do you use your SB800 on camera with the M8 or off camera with a sync cord? Thanks, Stan
ho_co Posted November 24, 2006 Share #6 Posted November 24, 2006 Mark-- Do you use a SafeSynch? Does any of the automation work? The Nikon's pre-flash *sounds* similar to the M8's, for example. --HC
harmsr Posted November 25, 2006 Share #7 Posted November 25, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Good question and now you have me interested, as I have the SB800 for my D200. I'll have to see what it can do with the M8. Ray
jrgeoffrion Posted November 25, 2006 Share #8 Posted November 25, 2006 Does Metz have a off camera cord that i can get for the Metz 54 The Nikon off-camera cord works great with my DMR. Not sure if it will work with TTL on the M8 however.
herbkell Posted November 25, 2006 Share #9 Posted November 25, 2006 The Nikon off-camera cord works great with my DMR. Not sure if it will work with TTL on the M8 however. Yes is does - see my post above TTL exposure was good
marknorton Posted November 25, 2006 Share #10 Posted November 25, 2006 Currently, I use the SB800 on the camera hot shoe, it's a bit top-heavy, but there's no need to use a safe-synch because it only presents 6v to the hot shoe. No danger to either the user or the camera. And yes, I have measured it with a voltmeter. As a flash, it's much more functional than the Leica SB-24, especially the swivel/tilt head. gesper Posted November 25, 2006 Author Share #11 Posted November 25, 2006 Thanks, that's very helpful. What functionality does it have beyond Manual? Do TTL or TTL-BL work?
innerimager Posted November 25, 2006 Share #12 Posted November 25, 2006 good news! I wrongly assumed my SB800 would not meter on the M8, that's great!....Peter
hammam Posted November 25, 2006 Share #13 Posted November 25, 2006 Yes is does - see my post above TTL exposure was good Can you confirm that: you use your SB-800 in TTL mode (not A or manual) with the M8 and it works?
Riley Posted November 25, 2006 Share #14 Posted November 25, 2006 now thats interesting, Metz support told me that Leica have the Nikon hotshoe so D2 might use Nikon flash too as to flash trigger voltages Photo Strobe Trigger Voltages 54MZ-3 4.17V from Paul Schuurmans SB 800 isnt listed Riley

Joseph S. Wisniewski Posted November 26, 2006 Share #16 Posted November 26, 2006 Mark--Do you use a SafeSynch? You shouldn't. As other's mentioned, the Nikon's trigger voltage is to low to harm the M8. It's also too low that it will not reliably energize the circuitry of a Weinn SafeSync, so if you use a SafeSync, you'll have unpredictable flash. Does any of the automation work? The Nikon's pre-flash *sounds* similar to the M8's, for example. Sorry, No preflash based mode will work. Whether or not it "sounds" similar, it isn't. Eventually, Metz will come up with an adapter for one of their flashes, but for the Nikon, you're sort of stuck in "M" or "A" modes.

ho_co Posted November 26, 2006 Share #18 Posted November 26, 2006 You shouldn't. As other's mentioned, the Nikon's trigger voltage is to low to harm the M8. I wouldn't have expected a problem in *that* direction! Sorry, No preflash based mode will work. Whether or not it "sounds" similar, it isn't. marknorton Posted November 26, 2006 Share #19 Posted November 26, 2006 I agree with Joseph. The SB800 is safe to use on the M8, you're not about to either cook the M8 or get an electric shock from a cable. It works fine but in a rather basic way, positively ancient compared to working with Nikon's "Creative Lighting System" and their matrix balanced fill-flash. The SB-24 is functionally a better match with the M8, but it's a bit of an over-priced runt with a clunky user interface and inevitably rather harsh direct lighting. Hopefully, the rumoured dedicated flash from Metz will be better. As an experiment yesterday, I tried to using Nikon's macro ring flash yesterday mounted on the front of the M8 and it was very much trial and error, not to mention I couldn't see anything through the viewfinder which is kind of limiting!
