aboodchy Posted October 10, 2009 Share #1 Posted October 10, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi there I've been browsing through this forum for a couple of years and this is my first post. A little late huh? Anyways, I've been lusting over an M8 all these years and with the M9 out, I've put my order down with Richard Caplan. This will not be my first Leica (I've owned C-lux 1, D-lux 4 and V-lux), but my first high-end Leica. I have not had any experience with any of the Leica lenses, but am pretty knowledgable of all the M lenses and have read numerous reviews and seen photos, yada yada yada... To start out, I want two lenses: a wide angle, and a normal one. I was thinking about the new 18mm. It's not too expensive (compared to 16-18-21) and really is looking like what I want. However, I'm looking for that infamous Leica bokeh, so I don't know if it's worthy. Perhaps the new 21 f/1.4 with it's shallower depth of feild will achieve more fantastic bokeh. But...it's so expensive. So has anyone compared the two? As for the normal lense, I want a 35mm that is all about bokeh. I've read that the 35mm cron ver. 4 is called the "king of bokeh". So should I purchase an old cron or go for the new summarit, which has been reviewed as being soft and having exquisite bokeh. I'm planning on purchasing a new Nocti in the near future, but until that blessed day comes, I am really, really confused. Oh, and my main focus on the two lenses are bokeh. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Advertisement Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 Hi aboodchy, Take a look here Another which lenses I should buy for my M9 thread. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Shootist Posted October 11, 2009 Share #2 Posted October 11, 2009 Normal is a 50mm lens on 35mm format. 35mm is a moderate wide. 28mm is a wide angle. 24/21 (take your pick) are super wides. 12/15/16/18 are ultra wides (make the 12mm a ultra ultra wide). If I was to only have 2 lenses, one wide the other normal, I'd go for a 28 and a 50. If I wanted a little wider then 28, which IMHO is wide, I go for either the 24 or 21 but never the 18 or lower. IMO those lenses used on 35mm format are specialty lenses. For years I use a 28, 50 & 90 on a M camera and always found 28 wide enough 99.99% of the time. Now with the M8 I have a 21, which on the M8 is equivalent to a 28mm lens, and only find it not wide enough 1% of the time. Your choices are ultra wide and moderate wide, 18 & 35. That may work for you, it wouldn't for me. At least not as a 2 lens kit. If you are set on those focal lengths then go for it. But if you have never used a 35mm camera, always using one of the small sensor cameras, you may not have a good idea just how wide a 18mm lens is. Good luck and enjoy the M9. stephengilbert Posted October 11, 2009 Share #4 Posted October 11, 2009 Just curious: why another one of these threads? You know that adding a post to an existing thread will bring it to the top of the list, right?
