A while ago they said "December", but with all of the M8 fuss, etc., I haven't heard anything more recently.... And supposedly there is a "filter adapter" that allows mounting of a 67mm filter - is this something that comes with the Tri-Elmar, or is it purchased separately? The lens is show as having a max diameter of 54mm so that the filter holder (14473 - about $55) looks to be a step-up ring to the filter size of 67mm to prevent vignetting. What's not clear is how the lens hood - which also protects the protruding front lens element - works when the filter is used. Given the filter is pretty much mandatory, I think the TE with all this stuff on the front is going to make the lens rather unwieldy when the alternative of the CV 15 is so small. I almost think they should offer an alternative filter solution (the existing one has to handle the lens being used on a film M) which is suited to the lens being used on an M8. Maybe the step-up is simply unneeded, and a smaller filter could screw into the front of the lens, for the M8? Or does the front element protrude too much for that? The front element certainly protrudes quite a way and the hood is there to protect the lens as much as anything. I expect the filter holder adjusts the diameter (as a step-up ring does) but also move the filter forwards to clear the front lens element. For M8 use, I'd like to see a different adapter which allows the use of a 55mm filter. The extra diameter is likely not required for the M8. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

I wonder if an empty filter holder used as spacer would clear the lens, then another filter ring with IR filter in it....I used to use an empty filter holder ring as a poor-man's lens shade....and maybe the hood would fit over all that? But I guess I'll wait and not order the 67mm adapter - it sounds like an ugly monster So many damn trade-offs! Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

With the new need for an IR filter when used with the M8, there should be a more compact solution which recognises the restricted angle of view when the lens is used on an M8. marknorton Posted November 25, 2006 Share #9 Posted November 25, 2006 The lens hood is unusual - the lens presents a male thread, not a female thread, so that the thread is on the outside of the lens, not on the inside; in effect, the lens hood screws onto the lens not into it. The thread is also (I think) red anodised to remind you the hood is missing. Take a look at the section diagram on the web-site and you can see the front lens element is very exposed without the hood or filter holder mounted. When the filter holder is mounted on the lens, it must present an E67 female thread for the filter, but you will not then be able to use a hood unelss you can find a wide angle E67 hood. Holding a E69 filter from my D2 up to to the existing, similar size (slightly smaller, actually), TE and the whole thing is going to be on the big size. Leica need an alternative filter holder to take a smaller filter for digital use and a hood to go with it. The 21mm Elmarit takes a 55mm filter and provides (in 135) the same angle of view as the new T-E does at 16mm on the M8, so something like the accessory carrier from the 21mm lens modified to screw onto the front of the new T-E would work - 55mm filter, existing hood (same as that used on the 21/24/old 28-35-50 T-E). At least then it willuse the same filter as other lenses, and then get a screw-in 55mm lens hood (or figure out how to attach a Leica hood, maybe even with epoxy...). that probably won't vignette with the crop factor. And I wonder how much the 67mm filter holder will block the finder - even up that high, due to the wide angle, the big filter will probably intrude...
