lars_bergquist Posted October 11, 2009 Share #21 Posted October 11, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) A worn-out Leica lens must have taken some wear indeed! I presume that the Elmarit you mention is either the original four-element one from 1958 or the later and shorter Tele-Elmar v. 1 from the 'sixties. None of these is bad, but they are obviously not up to modern standards, and their performance is definitely not indicative of what modern 90mm lenses do. The just-discontinued Elmarit-M I own is tack sharp, and its successor the 90mm Summarit is not inferior to it.Try one. Advertisement Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 Hi lars_bergquist, Take a look here Glass line-up for M9 - Please help.... I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
SJP Posted October 11, 2009 Share #22 Posted October 11, 2009 28/2, 50/1.4 90/2.8 is all you will need to make really good photo's, other focal lengths are fun but largely superfluous. Alternative set would be 21 35 75 but in either case three lenses really is sufficient. In fact I really enjoy taking one lens only (or only using one lens). It clears the mind from deliberation & agonising. Less is more.
jagsiva Posted October 27, 2009 Author Share #23 Posted October 27, 2009 Guys, thanks for all the input. So this is what I have ended up with: M8 (to play with while I patiently await my M9) 21/2.8 ASPH, 28/2 ASPH, 35/2 ASPH, 50/2, 90/2 APO I may add an ultra wide (either wate or super-elmar) but am gonna wait for Sean or someone else to do a detailed writeup on the M9. I am quite happy with the lineup, I think all the lenses fit inside the hood of my Canon 85/1.2 Just getting used to the M8, the files look quite nice, and very different from any of the Canon files I am used to. Thanks again.
lars_bergquist Posted October 27, 2009 Share #24 Posted October 27, 2009 I think that you will find that you use one of those lenses for ninety percent of your shots, and one other for pretty well the rest of them. What you decide to do then -- sell, swap, or hoard -- is up to you. The old man from the Age Before Many Lenses
doug_m Posted October 27, 2009 Share #25 Posted October 27, 2009 I'm sure you will do fine with the set-up you have chosen. However, anyone else who is a (not too impoverished) newbie and who is reading this thread should seriously consider buying the 50 mm l (f1.4) ASPH as their first M9 lens and then branching out if needed. You can go broke but not wrong with the M9/ 50 lux ASPH combo.
Laica Posted October 27, 2009 Share #26 Posted October 27, 2009 Reading this thread with much interest as a newbie Ordered a black M9 last Friday and being delivered this week. Was doubting between the 35mm summicron and 50 mm summilux but I like to shoot some portraiture and decided for the 50. However, for street shooting I kind of feel 35mm is more suitable. doug_m Posted October 27, 2009 Share #31 Posted October 27, 2009 "I agree, but this is lens is back-ordered everywhere." As of last Saturday there was both a new black and a new silver 50 lux ASPH available for sale at Glazer's Camera in Seattle, Washington. Ask for Mark. Glazer's has always given me excellent service.
