bscott Posted October 17, 2009 Share #3 Posted October 17, 2009 I go to the Smokies each year and can tell you that there are no camera shops that are of any interest. Spend as much time as possible taking photos in the Smokies.
clw Posted October 17, 2009 Share #4 Posted October 17, 2009 Thompson's in Knoxville is the best, but they don't have very many used cameras anymore. They're very knowledgeable though. Talk to Mark.
troyfreund Posted October 18, 2009 Author Share #5 Posted October 18, 2009 Hey folks, thanks for the replies--just got back last night. Wanted to visit Thompson's in Knoxville, but it didn't play into the schedule well. Had a great time hiking in and photographing the Smokies though--what beauty (and some terrible traffic too!)! garyp Posted October 20, 2009 Share #6 Posted October 20, 2009 Troy Where did you hike in the Smokies? One of the great things over there is that if you park and walk 100 feet down most any trail, you can feel pretty much away from everything. I parked at the "Sinks" a few years ago [big traffic spot] and hiked all day down the trail that leads from there....I saw only one other person all day! troyfreund Posted October 21, 2009 Author Share #7 Posted October 21, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) We did the Chimney Tops Hike (off the NewFound Gap Road)--2 miles out, 2 miles back. That was pretty steep, but awful nice. Unfortunately, we were dismayed when we nearly reached the peak to learn that the last 100 yards of trail were closed for rehab, hence the portrait Rachel made of me! We also went to the east end of the park and checked out Hen Wallow Falls. That was about 2.5 miles in and 2.5 out, and definitely worth the hike! I've also attached a snapshot from that. garyp Posted October 21, 2009 Share #8 Posted October 21, 2009 Great pics Pretty crappy of them not to post the "closed" sign at beginning of the trail. That's [almost] the whole point of going to Chimneys is getting up on the rocks. I spent a lot of time over there in my younger days. Most times we'd have all weekend, but if we could only manage one day to go hike, we would leave Nashville around 2 a.m., get to the Smokies a little after dawn, hike all day, and get back home around midnight. Ah, the good ol' days Gary
troyfreund Posted October 21, 2009 Author Share #9 Posted October 21, 2009 Cool story there, Gary. Yeah, I agree--they totally should have put that sign at the trail-head. Posted 3 more snaps at my blog--non-Leica images, but at least from a rangefinder--my Fuji GS645S (60mm lens). Pretty keen camera. preview: Gatlinburg, TN Midwest Editorial Photo: Troy Freund
