Not been able to reach Malcolm but Leica UK will call me when they get the relevant parts (week to 10 days) and as I live in MK they will do it while I wait for £145. Not exactly cheap!

Exactly !! Malcolm charges in the region of £50 - £60 , a hell of a lot cheaper and just as good. With regard to resale, do not worry, Malcolm Taylor is well know as probably the finest independent Leica repairer in the UK, a lens offered for sale with a receipt for any work carried out by Malcolm is to the prospective buyer great reassurance that the work done is of the highest order.

They did my 35 Summicron whilst I waited but I was charged something like £75 in 2007. It's a good job Leica stuff/services are not part of the basket of goods used to calculate inflation.

Well, I've spoken with Malcolm now and I'm confident that he will do a great job. So the choice for me seems to be pop into Leica UK for a while you wait service at £145 or send the lens to to Malcolm including postage for about half the price though L'll have to be without the lens for between one and two weeks.

I'll see how I get on with the 75 and 35 combo and have a think about what best to do. I may just not bother doing anything until I decide on which wide angle to go for which will likely be in the New Year.

Thanks for all the input.

Mark, have MK cut the price of coding? When I emailed them in July they quoted £120 per lens ! Perhaps they have learned of just how professional the job is that Malcolm does and how reasonable too

Simon

No, I don't think so - just a case of faulty memory on my part. So I apologise for giving out misinformation. I must dig out the invoices from Leica and remind myself how much I paid.

Still worth getting the 35 coded, whichever way you go.

Cheers

Mark

The M-Coder works fine for me (I was a beta tester). I do have to thicken the marks slightly to the left (with the codes on the bottom half of the lens). Your mileage may vary.

On some lenses, the coding rubs off quickly, on others, it lasts for a couple of months. Just depends on the individual mount.

The pens supplied with the coder have a very good ink, which lasts much longer than a Sharpie marker. They can dry out, especially if not kept tightly capped. Tim Isaac told me this weekend that you can use a second pen to draw more ink to the tip. Touch the tips together for a while, then draw some marks on paper to get the ink flowing again).

In the U.S, John Milich is tops for milling lens mounts for self-coding with model paint, nail polish, etc. He also makes a great LTM adapter that has the coding area milled.
