Advertisement Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 Hi markowich, Take a look here Super Elmar 18 mm - couple of questions.. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
philipir Posted April 29, 2010 Share #22 Posted April 29, 2010 I have an M9 and 18mm SE, and I love the camera and the lens. No filter, just rely on the excellent hood - the front element protrudes past the metal. Try here for some full frame pics of the British pavilion at Shanghai taken with this combo. I have compared them subjectively (100% in Lightroom) with some "pro" pics taken with DSLRs and PC lenses and the definition doesn't compare, especially at the edges. The jpegs don't do justice. None shot above f5.6 and several wide open. Shanghai Expo British Pavilion

I do see some slight reddish/magenta cast on the left hand side in some images, are these taken with the latest firmware installed? I'm curious because I've considered this lens. Shade Posted April 30, 2010 Share #24 Posted April 30, 2010 I have been using the 18mm super elmar on my m9 for a bit, and I think its a great performer. It is also very compact for its class, extremely sharp even wide open, great microcontrast, and I do not experience any colour shift issues that some reported. I also happen to really like the metal hood instead of the plastic ones. I hate the fact you need a special filter and holder for it, since it'll block your viewfinder more, especially with nd or cpl filters.

Thanks Shade, Yes I left the magenta there as they were posted very quickly to update the client (we built it). It has 1.116 which is the latest on the Leica website. I need to experiment more I think. It seems to be along the short edges with the left the worse of the two and not heavily in the corners like the M8 without filters. I will post results when I can get round to it.
