amod Posted October 6, 2009 Share #1 Posted October 6, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I am a beginner and have recently bought a Leica D-Lux 4. Most of the time, my subject for photography is my 8 month old daughter mostly inside the house and during daytime, but unfortunately I am getting a lot of blur or out of focus photographs. The baby 1&2 settings in the SCN mode do not help much either and the results are more or less the same. So, I tried photographing using the manual mode but not too successful either. Could someone give some basic technical tips to help me take better photographs of my daughter? Regards, Amod

sliversurger Posted October 6, 2009 Share #2 Posted October 6, 2009 don't be afraid to boost up ISO, up to 800 is still acceptable with DLux 4 have f stop between 2.0 and 2.8 keep an eye out on shutter speed; if too low chances are your photos will be blurry have center weighted focus and keep your baby framed in center pre-focus move baby closer to brighter light source like windows or turn on room lights forget about those baby modes in the camera; use Manual mode and experiment with combination of Aperature and Shutter speed. Boon113 Posted October 9, 2009 Share #4 Posted October 9, 2009 i'm very much the same. i got my d-lux 4, 2 days ago and my main subject is my 7 months olds baby. sliversurger was totally right, forget abt the baby mode i keep f stop at 2 all the time ( at 24mm), iso 400-800 indoor, i mostly take at A-priority mode, t/4 the shutter speed depends on the light. 1/40 - 1/50 is good enough. the thing is the baby doesn't want to stay still for you easily, so give her something to concentrate on, eg. a colorful ball try the B&W too, i'm sure u will enjoy it. Tenor1 Posted October 9, 2009 Share #5 Posted October 9, 2009 My suggestion is using the burst mode. Hold down the shutter and take multiple pictures. One out of each group should be clear. You can also use the "sports" scene mode. This allows a burst while having it's own defaults for the other settings. I like using the "P" with burst. This way you can raise the ISO appropriately for the available light. Another suggestion is don't stand too close. I've found that standing 6'-7' feet away causes a child to look more directly at you with less movement, but each child is different in that respect. You can easily crop the picture to create the closeup you want. A Note to Boon - Welcome to the forum and thanks for sharing a really cute picture! That picture highlights your babies face perfectly.
