jlancasterd Posted November 23, 2006 Share #4 Posted November 23, 2006 Hong Kong and Singapore. I would be grateful for local members' views. Thanks! Brian It's some time since I was last in Singapore but there used to be a large camera shop in the Centrepoint complex on Orchard Road - the one that contains Robinson's and M+S. They stock(ed) Leica M and R. I can't remember the name but they are on the second or third floor and have (had) a large Leica display in the side window. There also used to be some good camera stores in the basement of the Peninsula Hotel on North Bridge Road, at least one of which had secondhand Leicas in the window the last time I looked. rob_x2004 Posted November 23, 2006 Share #5 Posted November 23, 2006 Brian, your prices in England might be pretty steep, but Honkers might not be the treasure trove of cut price it used to be. Enquired the same myself of members a couple of months ago, only deleted my mails on it a week ago...always the way isnt it...but I found even the best recommended HK were very very expensive, and now, even from the two dealers on Ebay, if the gear is caught by the Australian customs net, then I can sometimes do better locally. Used to be you could save a fortune even if your import picked up the import fee and GST. Maybe it has something to do with Leicas management changes? Dont know. But members mails suggested they used to have the best marked prices available anywhere. Sorry, not the concise answer you wanted but...Hey!!! maybe the antipodes will be the next great Leica supermarket and it will be worth your while coming here for the next Leica challenge. At least we arent foreigners the language is right and we drive on the right side of the road. Hmmm...How PUC can I push here.
thondup Posted November 24, 2006 Share #6 Posted November 24, 2006 One of the best dealers is Tin Heung now located on Carnavon road in Tsimshatsui Kowloon. Professional and courteous.
firoze Posted November 25, 2006 Share #7 Posted November 25, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Brian, the BEST place to buy Leicas in Singapore is Cathay Photo in Peninsula Plaza. They are the biggest & best photographic dealers in Sing. Very reputed, the staff are knowledgeable and they have extensive stocks (maybe not the M8 though...). Tel #: +65-63374274, Peninsula Plaza, 111 North Bridge Rd. Website: cathayphoto.com.sg They also have a smaller branch in Marina Sq, Tel #: +65-63392807 For run-of-the-mill digital cameras, I recommend Alan Photo, ground Floor, Sim Lim Sq. You can bargain a bit there, and ask for free accessories with your purchase - memory cards, case etc. Regards

Used to be you could save a fortune even if your import picked up the import fee and GST. All too true unfortunately - the prices went up significantly at the end of July and even with the "official" discount are much more than they used to be. I could pick up the M7 starter kit in July for just on US$3000, it is now over US$4000. Similar story on the MP. Some of the grey market dealers can do a little better (Tin Cheung for example), but it is just not as cheap as it used to be.
