Leica Passport

I've just this morning received a UK Passport for a camera body. Here is the exact wording. This will change depending upon the country of origin.

CONDITIONS AND VALIDITY

This Leica Passport is given to the first owner of a new Leica camera body, Leica camera lens, Leica Ultravid binoculars or Leica Trinovid full-size binoculars imported by Leica Camera Limited and supplied through an authorised Leica dealer, Leica Specialist Dealer or Leica Premier Dealer, in the United Kingdom or Ireland.

When endorsed by Leica Camera Limited, this Passport is valid from the date the equipment was purchased, even if ownership passes to someone else during the period of cover.

If during the period of cover, any part of the equipment ceases to function, or functions incorrectly, from whatever cause, including accidental damage, it will be repaired by Leica Camera Limited free of charge. Alternatively Leica Camera may, at it's discretion, offer a replacement free of charge. In the case of special or limited edition items which cannot be replaced, Leica will endeavour to carry out repairs.

EXCLUSIONS

Cosmetic damage, damage resulting from non-Leica servicing or repair, loss of or damage to accessories (lens hoods, filters, eyecups, straps, cases etc.) is not covered.

Claims under this Passport will only be dealt with by by Leica Camera Limited. Items requiring attention should be sent by insured courier in adequate packaging, accompanied by a description of what function requires attention, and this Passport card.

Issue of a Leica Passport does not affect your rights. International Leica Guarantee cards, issued by Leica Camera AG, Solms, Germany will continue to be included with all cameras, lenses and binoculars. You are advised to keep these and to produce them to a Leica agency if your equipment requires attention while travelling abroad.

I've noticed the text above doesn't state the period of validity. On the opposite page is a section that is filled in by the local Leica agency and on that it says, Purchase date: 9/9/09 Expiry date: 8/9/2010, that's for an M9. I think the period depends on the item, it's no longer the blanket 5 years (was it?) like it used to be. The page also has a section for change of ownership.

So this passport is nothing like the older passport and just about worthless.

I believe the old passprt did cover cosmetic damage. If you dropped a lens or camera and nicked/dented it you could send it in to be checked and Leica would replace the damaged parts. At least that what I remember here in the states.

But there was no passport of any kind on the M8 in the states.

How is it worthless? First, it covers accidental damage (drop it from the top of the Leaning Tower of Pisa - no problem, Leica will repair it). Who gives a shit about cosmetic damage? Second, the passport (unlike the warranty) is transferable if you happen to sell the item.

Incidentally, I thought the cover for the M9 is two years? Have Leica UK reverted to the one year that was originally provided for the M8 when it was first released?

.............................Incidentally, I thought the cover for the M9 is two years? Have Leica UK reverted to the stingey one year that was originally provided for the M8 when it was first released.

Looks as if it's 365 days, not the 2 or 5 years as in times of yore. Warnung! Erbsenzähler bei der Arbeit :(.

I don't know about the M9, but here in the United Sates, the Passport Protection documentation specifically states that M8 cameras are not included. It also includes the following statement:

The Leica 3 Year Passport Protection Plan and Limited Warranty is non-transferable.
