johntobias Posted September 29, 2009 Share #1 Posted September 29, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere but I cannot seem to find it. I am the proud new owner of a mint M8 having upgraded from my old workhorse of an early M2. I use a superwide heliar 15mm, a summicron - c 40mm and a summicron 90........I have the IR filters but none of my lenses are coded. Is there any plans to allow manual lens selection in the firmware like the M9 as an upgrade of the m8 firmware??.....alternatively, should I bother to get my lenses coded and if so, what should I code the 40mm as?? ps, isn't the M8 brilliant???....I'm well pleased

Shootist Posted September 29, 2009 Share #2 Posted September 29, 2009 Unless you file down the one lug on the mount that work the lens selection lever inside the cameras lens mount you will need to code it as a 50mm lens. If you do file that lug down then you code it as a 35mm lens and it will bring up the 35mm framelines.
johntobias Posted September 29, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted September 29, 2009 I don't mind the 50mm frameline, its what 6 bit coding should it get?.....or do I sell it and get me a summarit 35 f2.5??...questions questions.....sorry but I've always used film B4

If one or the other is not in the correct spot the coding will not be seen/recorded. So if you leave the lug on the lens the same, bringing up the 50mm framelines, then you will need to code the lens as a 50mm lens. If you try to use a 35mm lens code with the lug as it is, bringing up the 50mm lines, the camera will not see the code at all (Well it will see it but it will just reject it and give no code or correction). Shootist Posted September 29, 2009 Share #6 Posted September 29, 2009 Ahh, thanks for that......didn't realise they were linked......what is your take on the 35 summarit as an alternative.?.....ps, visited atlanta a while back....Loved it but too built up for me, cnn tour was great. Well if you cut/file the lug then code it as a 35mm Summicron (version 4 or earlier) as it is a f/2 lens but not the 35mm ASPH (newest version). If you don't cut/file the lug then code it as a 50mm Summicron, again it is a f/2 lens. Any version of the 50mm Summicron will do as they are all basically the same going back to the late 60's. I see no reason to use a code for a different f/stop lens. That may play havoc with the correction part of the lens coding. And if you do that and then buy a 35mm f/2.5 Summarit lens you won't know which shot came from which lens. Other then the in camera corrections for each specific lens that is why I have all my lenses coded, IE so I know which lens was used for each shot. johntobias Posted October 5, 2009 Author Share #8 Posted October 5, 2009 After extensive testing. Have bought a summarit 50 will now add a 24 or 28 (35 was just not wide enough on the M8 but adore the 50 for portraits. Thinking of a 28 elmarit as next target.
