35mmSummicron Posted June 23, 2010 Share #21 Posted June 23, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) The green stripe was one of the things I *HATED* about the M8, I found it was easy to come by. If the M9 has any changes, I would say its 95% there (enough for me to no longer worry about it.) The following is a studio setup where I purposely setup several 2400watt/sec strobes facing into the camera lens only about 3 feet away to create lens flare on the M9 + 50mm Summilux ASPH (nearly impossible by the way!). I only got a small handful of these examples, and they came about only during my initial lighting tests--the actual shoot (some 1200 frames) were perfectly clean.......dunno why they showed up, dunno why they went away....Ghost in the machine? Again, on the M9, I am no longer worried about the green stripe, although it would be nice to *KNOW* with 100% certainty that a future digital Leica won't produce the effect under any circumstances... andy Welcome, dear visitor! wattsy Posted June 23, 2010 Share #22 Posted June 23, 2010 I shoot a lot of snaps directly into sunlight (often with the sun in the frame) and haven't seen anything like it before. The only problem I usually see is the ugly blooming you get around the actual disc of the sun but this is hardly unique to the M8/9.
adan Posted June 23, 2010 Share #23 Posted June 23, 2010 To get the green stripe, the bright light MUST fall exactly on the edge pixels. The reason being that it has to foul up the reference pixels masked at the edge that are used for setting black point. If those get some light leaked on them (the black isn't black), they modify the signal coming off "their" rows of pixels, darkening everything (and adding the green tinge because there are twice as many green pixels as either red or blue and the raw signal has not yet been de-Bayered). I tested for this the first day I had a demo M9 (the day after 9/9/09) and did not see it - but obviously my test wasn't rigourous enough, or some newer cameras have some subtle change in the masking. I will have to retry it with my production M9, and also on both sides of the frame, now that we know (red left edge) that the sensor centering may not be perfect or consistent. With the M8, I always suspected that it was due to Leica essentially reusing the DMR sensor, but with less masking to change the crop from 1.35x to 1.33x, which increased the risk of intense light leaking under the mask. mjh Posted June 23, 2010 Share #24 Posted June 23, 2010 With the M8, I always suspected that it was due to Leica essentially reusing the DMR sensor No, it’s a different sensor. The KAF-10010 in the DMR has a total number of 3991 pixels per line while the KAF-10500 in the M8 has 4098 pixels. Both sensors have 24 dark reference pixels per line. hoppyman Posted June 23, 2010 Share #25 Posted June 23, 2010 I saw a green stripe issue I think twice in 9000 or so frames with my M8. I can deliberately provoke flare for effect sometimes with the sun in frame, at the edge of frame or just out of frame with my M9 but I have not seen any green stripe in 1000 or so frames with my M9 so far. This is the centre of frame to the top and bottom edges. Welcome, dear visitor! Jamie Roberts Posted June 29, 2010 Share #26 Posted June 29, 2010 Maybe it's really an edge condition on the M9, with a certain luminance range? I don't know--I shoot a lot into the light (sun, flash, tungsten) and haven't seen it so far, even when the source is on the edge of the frame... okram Posted June 29, 2010 Share #27 Posted June 29, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) One question, Andy: I also like to have sun in my frame, but very often (with my M8) i have sensor blooming (or bleeding sun) issue. This happens with one over and one or more under proper exposure for the sun. If the image is very overexposed, or very underexposed, this is gone. I am curious wether this also occurs with M9? Thanks, M
