AShearer Posted November 22, 2006 Share #1 Posted November 22, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Last night I took about 50 shots in a school gym lit by overhead tungsten lights. All color, raw, WB set on tungsten. Most of the shots came out well exposed and clear, even though I was using shutter speeds of 15-30 due to the lighting. At one point, I moved to a different spot behind a group of singers. I took five shots from this spot. All of these showed up as black and white on the LCD, then turned to color after a couple seconds? Even on playback, they did the same thing. This only happened with the 5 shots made in this one spot. Once I moved again, further shots did not do that. Got home, opened the files in C1 LE. Same thing ! The image previews showed up in black and white. Once I selected the image it turned to color. Any ideas what is going on here?
Advertisement Posted November 22, 2006 Posted November 22, 2006 Hi AShearer, Take a look here Has anybody seen this strange anomaly? M8. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wattsy Posted November 22, 2006 Share #2 Posted November 22, 2006 The image previews showed up in black and white. Once I selected the image it turned to color. Does the thumbnail preview stay in black and white? If so, it sounds as if the embedded preview file in the DNG is, for some odd reason, in black and white. This would be consistent with the behaviour of the camera LCD previews which always appear to start with the low resolution embedded file and then load what must be a downsampled version of the larger DNG capture. xrogers Posted November 22, 2006 Share #3 Posted November 22, 2006 I don't know if this is what you're seeing, but the camera does this when shooting raw with the color saturation set to black and white. I suspect it builds a thumbnail based on the saturation setting, but if when reviewing you stop on the photo for a little bit, it does some processing of the photo (probably to prepare for zooming), notices the color data in the DNG and displays it. No; everything changes to color i.e. thumbnail, selected image on the main screen etc. Once it's changed it stays changed, but if I close C1 and re-open. Then the images are B&W again. I will check my settings and see if I can reproduce this effect. I have seen what you mean by how the camera pauses to process an in-camera image. The weird thing is, that these images load in BW in the computer as well.

I shoot some Fotos in DNG and JPG Black & White. Then I changed back in Color DNG only but my M8 still shows BW for a second and then switch to color even in C1 its the same. But as I said, it never happens again. Frank

I changed the settings on color sat to BW and then changed my mind and changed user profiles as a quick way to get back to where I wanted to be. It seems like the camera temporarily retained the bw setting. I was not shooting Jpg, and DNG, just DNG.
gogopix Posted November 22, 2006 Share #8 Posted November 22, 2006 I have seen this, and I think it is just the color management kicking in. Loads B&W first then adjusts.
