dNorm Posted September 28, 2009 Share #1 Posted September 28, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello folks. Here's the scenario. I am using a CV 40/1.4 Nokton on my M8.2. It brings up the 50mm frame lines and I have successfully coded it as a 50mm lens. I've read that it should be coded as a 35mm lens, but when I do that, the camera does not recognize it as a 35mm. I know the camera is fine, it reads my Zeiss 35/2 Biogon as a 35mm lens. So now my question, does the 6-bit coding have to match whatever framelines the bayonet brings up, i.e. if it brings up the 50mm framelines, it can not be coded as a 35mm? Any feedback welcomed. Cheers. -Norm

hoppyman Posted September 28, 2009 Share #2 Posted September 28, 2009 Yes. The camera logic requires agreement from inputs of frame line selector and 6 bit coding sensor. For the M8 you need the 35/24 frame lines if you want to code as a 35. Possibly this is no longer so with the manual lens selection option with the M9 of course. I've not used the non-Leica lens you mentioned but I'd be surprised if correction was significant bewtween the 50 and 35 anyway. Really only which frame line is closer for you would be more important. Modification of your lens may be possible. It might be cheaper to sell it towards the 35 or 50 of your dreams though! Shootist Posted September 28, 2009 Share #3 Posted September 28, 2009 On the Leica Summicron-C 40mm f/2 lens I use I code it as a 35 and have ground down the lug on the mount so it does bring up the 35mm framelines. I suspect you can do the same with the 40 CV. But as others have said does it really matter for the correction? For me, using a original M8 with tight framelines, the 35mm framelines match the lens better then the 50 framelines did. For you using a M8.2 with the wider framelines it might not matter that much. dNorm Posted September 28, 2009 Author Share #4 Posted September 28, 2009 Thanks Geoff, I appreciate the clarification. I like this lens, perhaps I should just leave it well enough alone. Cheers. -Norm Yes. The camera logic requires agreement from inputs of frame line selector and 6 bit coding sensor. For the M8 you need the 35/24 frame lines if you want to code as a 35. dNorm Posted September 28, 2009 Author Share #5 Posted September 28, 2009 Thanks Shootist. You may be right in that there may be little value to worry about the coding at this focal length. I'll shoot with it some more to see if there is any need for worry. cookedart Posted September 28, 2009 Share #6 Posted September 28, 2009 I've been told you can file down the mount to have this recognized in the rangefinder mask as a 35 as well...
