doowop Posted September 27, 2009 Share #1 Posted September 27, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) hi guys, i'm new here and need help. unfortunately, my M4-P has a broken rewind shaft/fork. to cut the story short, i'm looking for a spare for the rewind shaft. are there any other places i could get the replacement? i tried DAG but they don't have one.. is it possible to fix/replace the shaft without opening the top plate? or better off sending the camera for a replacement/CLA? thanks! MattLain Posted September 28, 2009 Share #2 Posted September 28, 2009 have you tried Sherry Krauter? she's highly respected in the repair/restoration dept. Sherry Krauter.com -- Home of the Golden Touch.
MattLain Posted September 28, 2009 Share #3 Posted September 28, 2009 I forgot to say welcome to the forum there's a lot of help here from people glad to share their thoughts or expertise. Back to your problem, I'd have it repaired professionally just to be sure there aren't any further issues with the camera. As simple as it is to remove the M4-P top-plate I personally only do it to clean the windows and leave the more technical stuff to the pros, the money spent takes away your own time and stress of doing a DIY job. Shootist Posted September 28, 2009 Share #4 Posted September 28, 2009 Do you mean the part inside the camera that grabs the top of the film cassette shaft? It has 2 prongs on it? If so I doubt this cane be changed without taking the top plate off and probably having to take the inner part of the camera out from the body shell. You might also nee to take the range/viewfinder off. I think this is best left to a real Leica repair person.
jhild Posted September 28, 2009 Share #5 Posted September 28, 2009 if it´s really the rewind fork that´s used to wind the film back then this part is full metal but can easily be removed after lifting the top plate. You don´t have to touch the rangefinder. However, as you speak about plastic I believe you mean the wind on lever which has a plastic part indeed. Sometimes you can get one on ebay and all you need is a flexiclamp to fix your problem. Btw, if there is a problem with the rewind mechanism it´s usually that small pin inside that´s broken.
