You are so gracious thank you. I might actually change my signature, which is my prerogative but at least I don't bask behind a pen name

Neither does Ivan according to my observation. Notably some famous and well respected characters have in the past though. Of course, when is a (presumed) pen name a pen name? You could presume that of me, and be very wrong, I assure you!

I have not read this thread lately but in case no one has posted this definition from the latest Oxford English Dictionary - you know the very big one with zillions of words.

"1. A picture or image obtained by photography; (originally) a picture made using a camera in which an image is focused on to sensitive material and then made visible and permanent by chemical treatment; (later also) a picture made by focusing an image and then storing it digitally."

So I think that clears it up. Mind you it does state 'focusing' it could be out of focus. And of course there are degrees of focus etc

Cheers Jeff. One of Kenneth's contentions in the past has been that digital photography isn't photography because it doesn't say so in his dictionary.

... Since the definitions in those dictionaries all ended in the film being chemically processed, scanning a chemically produced image and processing it digitally would still qualify as "photography", anyway.

I will when I am good and ready and not at your insistence Steve. My main contention is that I think all digital imagery I have had to view has been awful- period

I would not consider such an assumption of someone who holds such a high office as you and my pen name comment was not specifically aimed at Ivan after all he has enough to cope with being a Juventus fan.

I would just like to add my 2 cents.

Photography is the visual recording of a moment in time.

The original post is very provocative. Telling photographers who have spend countless hours and thousands of dollars honing their craft that they are not photographers is always going to be seen as a provocation.

So if they are not photographers, what should they advertise as? Digital imaging specialist?

But all members of this forum are entitled to thier own opinion and the original post was mine so I suggest you just get over it. I am sure also it will of pricked the consciences of those would have shelled out vast amounts of dollars, to quote you, only to find that thier objects of desire are outmoded and obsolete. Also, I did not tell anyone that they were not photographers. You have assumed that and that could by quite telling

Kenneth, you might want to also check the definition of 'awful'. It means to be full of awe, ie in awe of something.
But you know as well as I do what I mean surely but by all means please feel free to substitute the word for shit

from your original post

I never use the word photography to describe the digital process

You asserted that digital imaging is not photography, therefore, by your reasoning, not your words, digital imagers are not photographers. It may be your opinion, however it is a very radical and provocative opinion, therefore you should realize that people will take offense.

You did never answer my question. If "digital process" is not photography, what would you recommend that a practitioner of the digital arts call himself? Because clearly ACME photography is out the door.

I think Camelot is just over the next hill! ;)
Well at least it is good to see honest straight forward grown up debating rather that points scoring and I must say that this debate, apart from minor interruptions, has helped me to understand how I feel about this whole issue and for that I am grateful. I hope we can all move on now, thank you again
