The M9/M8 needs a keylock...

It already has this option. Take off the base plate and move the white switch by the battery.

Not a cool option on a £5000 camera but I glad it's made you think of a workround.... I'm also pleased that the firmware option is unpopular. Because what I'm really saying is that the M8 on off switch is pants and M9 deserved a better one.

I have never had the camera switch to the on position accidentally, but I have drained the battery by putting the camera in the bag with it in the on position. I have a soft release in my shutter release, so it is easier to have the shutter release pressed hard enough to wake the camera.

A closed Luigi half case effectively disable all buttons in the back.

Sorry. Today I had exactly the same problem with my M8 in a Luigi half-case. The profile setting changed, which is strange -- that takes THREE distinct actions: Push 'set', twirl wheel, push 'set' again.

It's happened to me a few times even with the half-case ... the profile was set to zero. Not that hard to imagine either because the set button followed by a few presses of the up-down arrows on the wheel and anything can happen. Just a bit of finger pressure while holding the case can cause this. I have now got into the habit of chimping the camera every so often before I take shots to make sure it is still in the right mode. I can't believe they didn't recess the buttons in the M9 and they really need to put some kind of lock in firmware.

How about implementing a digital combo lock which can be set to 3 digits or 5 digits.

e.g. [1] [2] [3] which uses the arrow keys to set the numbers.

The camera can be set to require this when turned off and on. This can be turned on when photographing in areas where the camera is likely to be stolen.

Also, with recessed buttons it may be harder to operate the camera with gloves on.

Many other camera makers are able to build cameras with reccessed buttons that can be operated with gloves.

True, ok recessed would be fine. But at this point we're more likely to get a firmware fix than a hardware fix, since the M8 and M9 are already designed.

Perhaps a future sapphire glass upgrade could also include a new back plate with some recesses...but in the meantime a firmware change might be relatively easy.

A good way would be to use the self timer position of the main switch and it would be even better allow the user to choose if wants to lock the buttons in the self timer position or if he wants to have the buttons locked in all positions exept the self timer position.
