D Lux 4 viewfinder problem

Hello

I appear to have a problem with the viewfinder for my D Lux 4 - I wondered if it was just me or if others have the same thing.

Briefly, the image I see through the viewfinder is not the same as that recorded by the camera.

If I line up an object so it is just inside the 24mm brightline (at the top of the frame) - the top of the object is cut off. If I line up on the same object using the LCD - the object is recorded faithfully.

The problem persists whether the object is close or distant - it's as if the the whole recorded image has simply been shifted upwards in the vertical plane.

Now - back in the summer I dropped the viewfinder - no obvious signs of damage, but that's when I first noticed the problem. I sent it off to Leica who replaced it free of charge. But the new one has exactly the same problem.

I don't believe this is operator error - the zoom is set to 24mm and I've taken a dozen or so images to check that I am not mistaken. I hope I've explained this clearly enough - it's like taking a group photo - making sure everyone is under the 24mm bright line and then cutting their heads off. Any thoughts would be welcome.

Thanks

ian

Hi Ian

I'm not sure, but your problem may be caused by parallax since - contrary to an SLR - what you see through the VF is not (exactly) what the camera is recording. Howeber, that the problem should then not be the same shooting a close range as long range...

Having the VF replaced seems to rule out that/reduce the likelihood of your problem is caused by a technical malfunction.

When I use a VF, I always make sure the object is well within the borders and then crop as necessary during PP.

If you are shooting in the 16:9 format, remember that the viewfinder, I believe, is framed for 4:3. As the camera uses only a portion of the sensor for 16;9, the picture you frame in the viewfinder (4:3) will have the top cut off if you are shooting 16:9. Also, parallex, particularly at less that 6 or 8 feet distance.

same problem here. Leica told me there is nothing wrong with the viewfinder.

The optics are the same as in the 24mm m-finder, so its not specifically build for the d-lux.

Use the close-up horizontal frameline for normal distances and everything should be fine

Hi everyone - thanks for the replies.

Problem appears solved. When the aspect ratio is set to 4:3 the viewfinder is fine. For purely sentimental reasons (back to my days with 35 mm film) I've been using 3:2.

Thanks again

Ian
