ZoomP Posted September 24, 2009 Share #1 Posted September 24, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Folks, Noticed a slight scratch on the viewfinder bluish coating. Initially thought it was dirty, but after cleaning it with water the scratch remains. I thought this is supposed to be scratch resistent coating. Did anyone else have scratched vf coating on your MP? If so, how do you take care of it? Thanks.
Advertisement Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 Hi ZoomP, Take a look here Scratched Viewfinder coating. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
twittle Posted September 24, 2009 Share #2 Posted September 24, 2009 Mine also has a slight scratch. It used to bother me, but I've gotten over it--doesn't really have a noticeable effect. My guess is that to fix it you'd probably have to replace the viewfinder, which most certainly wouldn't be covered by warranty, and would end up costing you a bundle. marknorton Posted September 24, 2009 Share #3 Posted September 24, 2009 Are you sure the scratch is on the outside?
ZoomP Posted September 24, 2009 Author Share #4 Posted September 24, 2009 Are you sure the scratch is on the outside? Definitely outside. Quite sure when I bought it, it was mint. I've checked.

THinking more preventive nature. How did you scratch it?
dodger Posted September 24, 2009 Share #6 Posted September 24, 2009 First solution is to get rid of those diamond-tipped eyelashes. Second solution is simply to be careful; be extra careful if you find you need to clean the finder - scratch-resistant is one thing, scratch-proof is another. Stong chance that a sctach will come from a near-invisible bit of grit when you wipe that annoying fingerprint off the finder; or it could be a bit of grit in your bag....really could be anything. I've been there too, and unless the scratch is ghastly you'll find you don't even notice it after a while (ie when your annoyance has eased). Simply bear in mind that it's vulnerable and treat it as such.
dpattinson Posted September 24, 2009 Share #7 Posted September 24, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have a nice scratch on my M8 VF as well, top to bottom on the outer edge of the finder. It will probably shave a few dollars off the resale value, but not enough to warrant the likely cost of repair (I think you have to replace the whole top-plate?). In use it's unnoticeable and doesn't bother me, but personally I think Leica could usefully put a sapphire glass VF in the M10 - much more useful than having one on the LCD. twittle Posted September 25, 2009 Share #8 Posted September 25, 2009 Will not change it of course. THinking more preventive nature. How did you scratch it? Not sure. Probably wiping off the myriad finger prints that've been on it. It's on the front, not back, of course.

Spoke to Leica UK in Milton Keynes and they assured me there was nothing to be concerned about and that it could be cleaned off eventually when it needs a service. I don't know whether this helps or equates to the perceived problems you are experiencing. My black M6 does not have this which first drew my attention to it

Hope they resolve for you soon. When it needs a service? That's like 10-20 yrs later for my MP.
