pgk Posted September 23, 2009 Share #1 Posted September 23, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) In some ways all the reviews and hype surrounding Leica's latest M amuse me. I've had my M8 for two years and shot many thousands of exposures with it and it still surprises me at times. I still feel as though I am learning all its digital capabilities, still discovering just how far I can push exposures, how to shoot HDRs to best advantage, how to produce files which convert to black and white best, etc., etc. Don't get me wrong, reviews have their place - after all buying a new camera has to be based on some information and anything in addition to that of the manufacturer should be helpful - but its only through extensive use of a camera that you can really learn about it. Am I alone in this thought?
Advertisement Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 Hi pgk, Take a look here NOT another review!. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Nicoleica Posted September 23, 2009 Share #2 Posted September 23, 2009 No, you are not alone. I fully agree with you. :)
lxlim Posted September 23, 2009 Share #3 Posted September 23, 2009 Not alone. Good reviewers help direct attention to little details that form our working habits but the in the daily working, we learn to compromise and change those habits to suit the tool or learn to resolve issues that bug us. So the end result is the picture but we either work well with the tool of our choice or live in frustration with it such that the picture suffers. plasticman Posted September 23, 2009 Share #4 Posted September 23, 2009 I'm not currently subscribed (because of laziness mostly), but the only reviewer that's ever persuaded me to buy any camera is Sean Reid - his appraisals of both the RD1s and the M8 helped me to make my mind up. My own feeling is that otherwise reviewers are often over-excited by the 'gear'.
BerndReini Posted September 23, 2009 Share #5 Posted September 23, 2009 Unfortunately, everyone gets overexcited by gear. A good friend of mine, just started using his M8 again after not taking a single picture for a year. Simply by getting excited over the arrival of the M9, which I don't think he needs, he started picking up his M8 again. Of course, he really wants an M9, and if buying this camera makes him go out and shoot pictures, great!
gfspencer Posted September 24, 2009 Share #6 Posted September 24, 2009 But its only through extensive use of a camera that you can really learn about it. You mean that I am actually supposed to use it? Dang. I knew I wasn't doing something right. Sadly, I don't use mine nearly enough.
