I am updating the firmware to 2.004. I followed the procedure, formating the card, loading the firmware, inserting in camera, got prompt to update, confirmed yes and the green upload bar has progressed completely to the right, but that screen continues and I have not been prompted to restart the camera. How do I proceed?

How many seconds did you wait in between before press yes ?

Like spylaw4 you do have to wait at least 3 seconds. Like him I am very conservative and count slowly up to ten. Imoprtant.

Thanks for the thoughts....I am using an SD, the firmware that was in the camera wouldn't accept SHDC and I don't have any. I waited about 30 seconds before I pressed yes. The battery was slowly running down and since it was going to quit anyway I finally turned it off. The firmware is on there but doesn't work...the set menu is gibberish, the "menu" won't come up and camera won't fire. I guess it goes back to Leica. Bill

Have you tried re-installing the firmware again? Make sure that your battery is fully charged, re-load the firmware onto the SD card, and run through the installation process again. I have heard that sometimes this works OK. Good luck.

I reloaded firmware 2.004 on my SD card (it had been removed by the M8 during the first update attempt..I presume that is standard), charged the battery and tried again. The camera did not recognize the card or the firmware. The set screen will still illuminate but the writing is intelligible. I talked with Leica and I am to "send it in". Thanks to everyone for their help.

No way to downdate to a previous firmware, like 2.001.

The firmware should not have been removed from card.

No the firmware update formats the card as the last step. Has been that way for a while now. In the beginning you could lock the card before doing a update but Leica changed that in one of the firmwares. The card now has to be in the UnLocked state for the camera to read and execute the update.

No the firmware update formats the card as the last step. .

That would explain why when updating my two M8's I cannot use the same download for both. I have to update one, then I re-format the card in a camera and have to download the firmware a second time from the Leica website before I can update the second body.

Well that is quite silly. First download the firmware update and store it on you computer hard drive, like in a folder called Leica with a sub-folder called Firmware Updates. Then un-Zip it to another sub-folder under the Leica\Firmware Updates folder called the name/number of the firmware, like 2.004.

That way you only need to download it once and then copy that un-Zipped file to the ROOT folder of the SD cards for each camera.

No need to redownload it and no need to worry if you can still get it if for some reason you need to reload it on either camera. You'll always have a copy of it.

Tom, you shouldn't have to download the upgrade file twice. I download and save the upgrade as a file on my desktop. You can use that one file any number of times, if necessary. I presume that is how dealers do it when offering the service.
