Two weeks with the M9 in Crete

Hi there

I've managed to produce some preliminary web pages of our recent trip to Crete.

The idea was to give a feeling for the range of subjects possible, and, more than that, to provide a little entertainment.

For the first time I've actually put captions to the pictures, I'm not sure whether it adds or detracts, but it's been fun thinking about it.

Comments and criticisms welcome, and, as usual, shortcomings are most likely down to the photographer, and not the camera.

It's worth mentioning that the camera performed flawlessly, sometimes in temperatures above 40C, was often splashed or dusty and sometimes almost too hot to touch.

I hope you enjoy looking at them almost as much as I enjoyed taking them!

OK. to play the devils advokate.... don't know what these images really prove, other than what I already know, Jono is a wizard with a camera... and this collection would make a beautiful book on Greece :-)

a new M9

Crete

could life be better?

I enjoyed seeing this fine series

many fine photographs in your offerings, many of which are very Jono Slackian

I loved seeing in particular "For Irakly" with its wit, "Leaning to Livaniana" with its gorgeous colors (and I have to assume you did not use a polarizer with the WATE,) the charming "Fingers and Thumbs" which was perfectly timed and perhaps my favorite "Bill Takes a Drag" a very clever photograph celebrating BW grain

fine work

your M9 has found a worthy owner

Sorry to crash the love party here.

While I do like the composition of this particular shot ("Bill Takes a Drag") very much, the quality of the file at high ISO is really crappy (1250 I believe). Not even the conversion to B+W can hide the awful noise and banding.

Jono you better reset the numbering on that camera soon or you will get the dreaded error of not being able to take any more image. I see that it is at L994xxxx so you do have a ways to go but if you shoot a lot you will run out of numbers soon.

Nice shots also.

Thanks for posting.

Beautiful.

Always enjoy your work Jono, whether it be Leica or the big Sony.

Love the composition of the final picture. :)

Great colors and great conversions to BW. Thanks for the link!

Beautiful work, great colours and breathtaking black and whites.

Beautiful pictures as always.

Love you compositions, find them very inspiring!

Beautiful captures. The B&W sky scene is stunning, thanks for sharing the extremes that this camera can achieve.

Thank you everyone ! I can promise you that it was more fun taking them :-)

Hi There Bo - Flattery will get you everywhere.

Irakly?! Several years ago I posted a photo I was very proud of, Irakly chipped in and said "All it needs is an alligator in the top right hand corner". I took this to heart, and, as you can see, this shot definitely has an "alligator" in the top right hand corner:)

NO . . unfortunately there seems to be an awful lot of work to do now I've got home!

Definitely some great shots out there. It seems you used a super wide angle at some point, what was it ?

thank you - it was the WATE - lovely on the M9

Nice work - I noticed that you pretty consistently had a negative -.7 or -1 ev dialed in.

Thoughts on the std meter calibration of the M9?

HI Graham - I have been using a pre-production M9, and the calibration is prbably not quite on. Added to which I would rather sacrifice a bit of shadow detail to ensure I don't blow any highlights.

Some of the best photography I've seen from a photographer using an M9 to date.

Great work Jono

HI there Sparkie - thanks for that - I've just joined the queue like everyone else (bart, where are you!)

Hi Haribo

Quite right - I was thinking of adding a disclaimer to this shot, but, as you say, the composition made it worth it.

It was actually at 2500 ISO, and the slowest shutter speed I could hand hold - which meant that it was about 3 stops under-exposed, so instead of 2500 read at least 10,000 ISO, more like 20,000. I didn't actually do anything to sort the noise and banding - it really didn't seem necessary.

Hi there - will it explode when it gets to 1000000? I'll need to be careful!

Great shots, and many are right along my preferred lines, i.e. details. Shot #71 is absolutely awesome; I wish I had taken it!

Hi Carsten

Thank you . . . I'm afraid that 71 might have been luck . . or, to be kind to me, let's call it serendipity!

Thanks for the kind words anyway.

Thank you for sharing your M9 snaps, Jono ;) And I like the captions !

Like anybody else here I've got my favourites: 9,25,33,49,54,55,63 and 72 ... forget noise and banding: it's just such a cracker !

Now some questions if you don't mind:

- how are the M9 reds compared to the M8 ? (how I dislike that colour, can't get it right)

- did you try bracketing ? (I gave it a try, but it felt rather remote and uncontrolled)

- did you notice any difference between the M9 and M8 shutter release ? (my M8 is still a bit 'gritty')

- how is the DOF in 'real world' ? Do you really have to stop down more than with the M8 ?

Well that's about it for now, thank you for taking time answering (posted this also on Dpreview)

Oh btw - I'm still queuing for my 'titanium' ... :(

Kind regards.

9 is interesting, as snowboarder just wrote it off (perhaps I'll like it again :))

49 is Emma's favorite - that beach is on the walk from Loutro to Sweetwater - most people walk straight through, but we always stop for a swim.

as for 72 - it was almost impossible to get as it was soooo dark.

Now some questions if you don't mind:

- how are the M9 reds compared to the M8 ? (how I dislike that colour, can't get it right)

Much better, but currently only C1 does it justice. I'm using Aperture and I've settled for a 9% hue adjustment on the red, which does the trick - I hope they look okay on the shots, I'm satisfied (and I'm quite hard to satisfy). It'll be better when Adobe and Apple have done camera specific profiles, but it's fine for getting on with (there are some profiles knocking around for LR if that's your poison).

There is much more detail in the bright reds than there was in the M8

- did you try bracketing ? (I gave it a try, but it felt rather remote and uncontrolled)

What's bracketing? Do you know, I don't think I've ever done exposure bracketing in my life. If there's time I fiddle until I've got it right, and if there isn't time . . . I make sure I don't over-expose

- did you notice any difference between the M9 and M8 shutter release ? (my M8 is still a bit 'gritty')

My M9 isn't gritty, one of my M8s is, and the other isn't, and the M9 shutter is louder than one M8 and quieter than the other - really, I think that you should consider them the same.

- how is the DOF in 'real world' ? Do you really have to stop down more than with the M8 ?

I've been using FF quite a lot recently, so I've got used to the devil (and the deep blue sea). Perhaps it would be good to say that you CAN stop down more. There IS a difference, and sometimes it's good and sometimes it's bad.

Well that's about it for now, thank you for taking time answering (posted this also on Dpreview)

Yes - I placed an order for the grey one today . . . I guess I'll get it sometime in 2010 (let's hope it's before the VAT goes up!)
