Hi Sean,

 

Do you find the mild focus shift on 50mm summarit lens is a common QC issue or just happen to some samples?

I'd need to test several examples to know but I suspect that it is endemic to the lens design. I don't often see significant sample variation in Leica lenses. They really do test each one before it leaves the factory. That doesn't mean a bad copy can't exist but its not likely.

 

Minor focus shift, for many photographers, may not be worth worrying about. The 35 Summicron ASPH shows mild focus shift but that has never posed a problem for my work.

It will be very interesting to see how the CZ lenses work. CZ made a big thing about designed in flare resistance. I thought long and hard a few weeks ago about getting a new 50 ZM Planar rather than a second hand Summicron 50, which was in the end slightly more than a Planar + hood. In the end, it was down to size consideration - the Summicron with built in hood, is just that bit neater as a package with an M8/9. The advantage of the new CZ is that it would not have needed adjustment as the Summicron does (back focus and not reaching infinity). This is inconvenient even if Collectible Cameras from whom I bought it, have very reasonably, volunteered to pick up the cost.

I have a hunch, not yet supported by testing, that many of the ZM lenses are going to perform very well on the M9. We'll see. It is true that the coatings on those lenses tend to be very effective and so they generally do show high contrast (for better or worse) on the M8.

 

Gosh, I hope that M8 and M9 forums merge as this kind of lens discussion really is relevant to owners of both cameras. I've suggested the merge but have heard nothing about it. In my mind, the different Leica DRFs have more in common than in contrast.
