innerimager Posted November 20, 2006 Share #1 Posted November 20, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) I think the fact that the M8 allows smaller file size options in Raw, (DNG) is an as yet overlooked valuable feature. To my knowledge, only the Kodak 14N./SLR/n-c series allowed this in the past, others only allow size choice in JPG. It is helpful when you know that 6 or less MP will do, but still want the advantages of raw to have this option for sure. Mostly this is for file size benefits like more # pics/card and faster handling of files in post. It also can help with high Iso noise, as the smaller files will show less noise. Now that's just a circular argument in that taking a 10MP file and downsizing it will "reduce" the noise as well, though in the Kodak cameras they actually seemed to get cleaner files with in camera downsizing then post downsizing. I haven't looked at this with the M8, but will. Still it's a very useful feature if you know that 8X10 will be the largest print or certainly for web based display shooting. Advertisement Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 Hi innerimager, Take a look here M8's Raw size options...nice. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stunsworth Posted November 20, 2006 Share #2 Posted November 20, 2006 Peter, is this selectable at the conversion stage? If so isn't it just a resampling done by the conversion software?
innerimager Posted November 20, 2006 Author Share #3 Posted November 20, 2006 Steve- Any post processing software can do this, but the M8 allows it to be done in camera. At the least the advantage is smaller files so more pics/card, it saves a step, and it MAY yield a file with less noise than if you downsized the 10MP file in post, if it's like the Kodak. Again, I haven't checked that, but still like the flexibility of in camera down sizing....Peter
stunsworth Posted November 20, 2006 Share #4 Posted November 20, 2006 But what happens if you decide you wanted a larger print than expected?
marknorton Posted November 20, 2006 Share #5 Posted November 20, 2006 The DNG is always the same size, irrespective of the size of the JPEG chosen. Quote from the manual: "Saving in RAW data format is always performed at the highest resolution". How difficult is that to understand?
innerimager Posted November 20, 2006 Author Share #6 Posted November 20, 2006 Mark- is that so? Why does the menu then offer different MP sizes for DNG as well as JPG's? I assumed the DNG file size would reflect the choice, I hadn't actually looked at the size, just at the fact the menu allowed the choice....Peter
chetccox Posted November 20, 2006 Share #7 Posted November 20, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) The menu does not allow the choice. If you select dng, you will see the size choices are no longer available. They are only available when you have chosen jpg. See page 97 of the manual. marknorton Posted November 20, 2006 Share #8 Posted November 20, 2006 There are 17 options - DNG only and 8 for JPEG only and 8 for JPEG + DNG. Each group of 8 supports 4 resolutions (10, 6, 2.5, 1 MP) times 2 compression levels (Basic, Fine). The DNG file is always 10 Mb.
innerimager Posted November 20, 2006 Author Share #9 Posted November 20, 2006 The menu does not allow the choice. If you select dng, you will see the size choices are no longer available. They are only available when you have chosen jpg. See page 97 of the manual. Wow, if that's the case I must have been dreaming. I specifically looked for this in the menu, and to my surprise I, thought, I could select the smaller sizes as DNG. Unfortunately, I can't check it now, s my battery is drained, and I left my charger at the hotel I was at this weekend! (I guess I'm looking like a complete idiot, but there was a good excuse. The hotel failed to give me my wake up call leaving me 12 minutes to get packed and to the airport. It's in the mail to me now). So, I will check again, and assuming you are right, I apologize for posting incorrect info. best...Peter
chetccox Posted November 20, 2006 Share #10 Posted November 20, 2006 Peter - No problem. I believe Mark has given you more info in the previous post. The menu structure is a little confusing perhaps, but the manual spells it out quite clearly. If you select any jpg alone, or any jpg + dng in the menu, the size option is available but applies only to the jpg file, as does the selection of basic or fine. If you select dng only, the size choice is no longer available for selection. I hope you get your charger. Have fun.
