trs Posted November 20, 2006 Share #1 Posted November 20, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) It's been almost two weeks since I got my M8 and have not really had much chance to take it out. Been shooting around house to learn basics of range finder operation, my first time with RF. Except for the annoying magenta issue, I really enjoy handling this camera. Saturday monring, I took out the camera with freshly charged bettery. Took couple of snap of sunrise as we were heading out. Camera was working fine. Since my wife was driving, I had the camera on my hand while we were in the car, about 40 minutes. Then, left the camera in the car for about 20 minutes while we were unloading stuff from car. When I picked up the camera from car the seat, it felt owfully warm. I did not pay much attention to it, just put the camera on my jacket pocket and help setup things. We were attending holiday craft fair. When done setting up things, I thought I would take some pictures. Camera was still very warm. I turned it on, and there it goes nothing is on. Took out bettery and put it back in, no luck. Repeated few times, no luck. Then, I took better again and did not put it unitl camera cooled down. Put the battery back again, still no luck with power. I was getting really worried because I realy did not want to be without this camera duing the holiday season. Came home and recharged the bettery. Popped it in, walla. Camera started working again. Such a relief. But, now in back of my head I am always worried. Charge before the incident was third charge of bettery except this time, I had left the battery plugged in over night (manual says it is OK). When I charged after the incident, it did not finish recharging in three hours, so I just pulled it out. Camera shows it is full. Just sharing my experience. -tanka
Advertisement Posted November 20, 2006 Posted November 20, 2006 Hi trs, Take a look here Scary incident with M8+Battery over weekend. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
michael friedberg Posted November 20, 2006 Share #2 Posted November 20, 2006 Me too --I had a similar incident the weekend before last. I was shooting photos in a mall, trying out the camera, and put it in my Billingham bag for about 30 minutes. I don't recall but it might have been inadvertently left "on" (on the S indicator) or it might have been switched accidentally when put in the bag. When I took the M8 out the battery was really warm and I couldn't get the camera to work at all. Fortunately, I had a spare battery (got it at the time of purchase) which I popped in and then the camera worked fine. When I got home 3 days later I recharged the battery that overheated, which then took a charge and then worked fine when I tested it in the camera. But this is scary --could there be defective batteries and a potentially larger problem, like damage to the camera? flyboy Posted November 21, 2006 Share #3 Posted November 21, 2006 I would call up Leica Customer service at once. RGDS Christof
john_r_smith Posted November 21, 2006 Share #4 Posted November 21, 2006 Just a cautionary word - I hate to say this, but you chaps may have a real problem here. It sounds as if the battery in both cases self-discharged very rapidly for some obscure reason. This should never happen, obviously, even if the camera is left on in review mode - it should just gradually run down with no overheating. If the camera was that warm to the touch externally, it must have been very hot indeed inside the camera, with a real risk of damage to internal circuitry. I would put the battery aside which did this trick, and use a different one. Also call your Leica service centre and inform them of the fault. mhoutman Posted November 21, 2006 Share #5 Posted November 21, 2006 not again........Sony had several recalls for defect battery's for Dell and Apple recently. It is new to me that camera's batteries are vulnerable too. Are they also - as the charger - from Ansmann ? ANSMANN - PRODUCT RANGES
spylaw4 Posted November 21, 2006 Share #6 Posted November 21, 2006 Definitely reminiscient of the laptop Sony battery problem. It's the actual manufacturer name that is needed. Leica needs to know this asap.
