Secondhand Leica dealers in UK

To show you how bad the used R market is, in London last week I tried to offer some R lenses in part exchange for an M 24mm Summilux and was told by the shop assistant that he would probably be fired by his manager if he did. Most R lenses in their window were around the £299 -399 mark regardless of what they were. Oh, and the lenses I was offering him were the 35-70 2.8 Apo and the 70-180 2.8 Apo, no slouches! they just weren't interested.:(

Bob.

I was obviously wise to trade my R lenses in when I did... (2 months ago as part of a deal on a Nikon D700 outfit)

If you can wait, I would unhesitatingly recommend Ffordes to sell your Leica items on commission.

They get as good prices, or better, as you will get anywhere.

I have no connection whatsoever with this company other than as a satisfied customer.

Just my opinion,

Michael

I believe that some of the dealers such as Jonathan Harris no longer show sell lists as they can sell all the gear they want to foreign buyers because of the state of the pound.

Just surmising - is there more of a market abroad for R gear and if you must sell it, would the likes of Jonathan Harris be interested?

I'm after some recommendations re the above.

I'm fortunate to have a very good selection of Leica R cameras( including 3 x R6.2s ) and lenses, and fancy exchanging some of the surplus for a Leica M camera and lens.

Any thoughts on who to approach for a fair deal? I'm in the Oxford area, but clearly a trip to London is no problem.

Thanks

R6.2 cameras command good prices so most UK Leica dealers would probably sell on commission for you or offer reasonable PX. Lenses are another matter and depending on what you have they might not sell quickly.

However, have you considered trying to sell the items on this Forum's "Buy and Sell" section? http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/market/

Cheers

Thanks for the guidance gents..... and no, I hadn't appreciated just what a bath Leica R prices had taken over the past couple of years.

I have to presume that at some point a manufacturer will produce a decent digital body that I can use all my superb lenses on?!

Many Leica R users have bought Canon DSLRs and use their R lenses on them with an R to EOS adaptor. You should be able to find a used full frame Canon 5D or 1Ds for less than £800. R lenses are also usable via adaptors on 4/3 and micro 4/3 format digital cameras .

Thanks for that Dunk - looks like a route I should be investigating further.

If considering a used Canon full frame digital SLR eg a 5D or a 1Ds or 1Ds Mk II some dealers advertise them with known shutter actuations ... eg 35,000 or maybe over 100,000 shutter actuations. Obviously, the lower the number the better. Other dealers either can't do this or don't bother. Three dealers who do quote shutter actuations are Park Cameras, Ffordes and Aperture Photographic. The problem with full frame DSLRs is that they may have been used professionally in a studio environment and thus could look pristine even though they have been heavily used. A Canon 1Ds with under 75,000 actuations could be a bullet proof bargain.
