mitchell Posted November 20, 2006 Share #1 Posted November 20, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just returned from Amsterdam where I bought the Heliopan Digital UV/IR filter for my M8. It seems to work the same as the B+W 486. So maybe it's another option if you can find it. I have only shot a few pictures with it, and haven't downloaded any so I'm not claiming results equal to the B+W. But, it does seem to be made for just this sort of problem. The dealer had only a E 46 so I bought it and a step ring so I have my Summicron 35 and 50 with the step ring, and my 90/2.8 with just the one filter. A cheaper temporary solution than 2 or three filters. Best, Mitchell

harmsr Posted November 20, 2006 Share #2 Posted November 20, 2006 Mitchell, There is a thread on the rangefinderforum about these filters where several bought them and are now trying to return them, saying that they do not work like the 486 filter. Best, Ray The are the same kind of filter, but not as strong. I have one but do not have an M8 so I'm not much help on the experimentation dept. They work on the RD1 but the RD1's IR sensitivity is not as high. Rex
mitchell Posted November 20, 2006 Author Share #4 Posted November 20, 2006 Thanks Ray and Rex. I was away from the forum too long. At least I didn't buy three of them. Best, Mitchell
Guest stevenrk Posted November 20, 2006 Share #5 Posted November 20, 2006 The are the same kind of filter, but not as strong. I have one but do not have an M8 so I'm not much help on the experimentation dept. They work on the RD1 but the RD1's IR sensitivity is not as high. Rex I own several of the Heliopans for use with CZs and DSLRs. They are designed to reduce IR in certain wavelengths. One fits the M28 elmarit. It's not that the Heliopan does not work at all, it is that it does not work as fully as the 486. The attachments below are two crops of test shots with the M8 -- one with a 28mm Elmarit that had the Heliopan digital filter, and one with the 50mm Summilux that did not. Processed in C1 using the current M8 profile with no changes. Converted to sRGB and jpg, but no other work in PS. There is some difference in exposure, but still think these should give you a sense and a reference point. The Heliopan clearly reduces the IR, but the camera strap is black in real life, and as it seems -- from the tests I've seen in SR's part 4 -- you would get with the 486, although at the moment until better profiles are available, even the blacks would come out at different levels of luminance and shadow detail as compared to a camera not as affected by IR (there is a thread on Sean's Part 4 on this forum that discusses the way the M8 IR impacts lots of colors that would likely not be within the range of the Heliopan, and the last post summarizes a conversation with SR on this issue).
