Advertisement Posted September 12, 2009 Posted September 12, 2009 Hi Gentleman Villain, Take a look here m7 + motor winder. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Rolo Posted September 12, 2009 Share #2 Posted September 12, 2009 If it's people/street your shooting it's a great accessory. All that's left is to focus and frame. Little bit heavier, but the grip makes it easy to carry in the hand, I use it on winder one position. You'll get so used to it that if you switch it off, you'll be forever forgetting to hand crank it. Can always remove it if space is an issue. A good addition IMO. andybarton Posted September 12, 2009 Share #3 Posted September 12, 2009 Agreed. But I use position 2 because position 1 is a bit weedy Always carry spare batteries...p
msweeney Posted September 12, 2009 Share #4 Posted September 12, 2009 Even though I have not used one personally, I have heard them from afar-- kind of a clunky sounding thing. I'd never buy one myself. And people I know that used one would rather have a rapidwinder. Just about the same speed, but manual (no batteries) and can be "switched off" if you don't want to use it. Hope that helps, Mike
Rolo Posted September 12, 2009 Share #5 Posted September 12, 2009 I had and used a Rapidwinder for a short time. Not for me as it breaks the concentration and caused me to move my camera. However, some love them. Noisy Motor-M ? Obviously not silent, but anywhere apart from a Reading room, or church it's fine.
andybarton Posted September 12, 2009 Share #6 Posted September 12, 2009 I traded my Leicavit for the winder. Much more 21C
Gentleman Villain Posted September 12, 2009 Author Share #7 Posted September 12, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) cool...thanks everybody for the info and also the warning about sound in certain environments
Michiel Fokkema Posted September 12, 2009 Share #8 Posted September 12, 2009 The former version was a bit clunky indeed. The new version is much improved. I do like it but don't use it much though. Makes a great combination with an elmarit 135. If the sound is too loud, just shut it off. Cheers, Michiel Fokkema
Gentleman Villain Posted September 12, 2009 Author Share #9 Posted September 12, 2009 ah..good to know about the new version. Thanks Michiel Sound shouldn't be a problem for me but it's still great to know everything possible before spending a lot of money.
budrichard Posted September 13, 2009 Share #10 Posted September 13, 2009 You need to be precise in what product you are asking about. Leica formerly made a 'Winder' and now makes a 'Motor M'. The two are in no way similar. The 'Motor M' is quiet, fast and discrete. Batteries last a long time. I use two M7's with Motor M's for weddings and they simply can't be heard in either Mode I or Mode II a few feet away. I have a Leicavit and much prefer the 'Motor M'.-Dick
dpattinson Posted September 13, 2009 Share #11 Posted September 13, 2009 I bought one to use with my M7, they are readily available and fairly cheap second hand - no reason to buy new. I didn't like it, I use M's because they are small and easy to carry. The winder has two flaws - it makes the camera bulkier and heavier; it kills the exposure lock as it advances to the next frame; I shoot mainly in the street, and it didn't really do much for me at all. I traded mine on a lens a couple of months after I bought it. My 2c.
innerimager Posted September 14, 2009 Share #12 Posted September 14, 2009 I have motor Ms on both my M7 bodies and really like them. One issue for me is that I shoot the M8 a lot. Sometimes I shoot the M7's together with the M8 on the same shoot. Consequently, it's easy for me to forget to manual wind down the M7 and I found myself occasionally missing shots! Now if I was raised on film Ms as many here, this would be so second nature that no amount of digital M experiences could make me forget, but for me it's a significant reason to always use the motor M. Beyond that, I find it quiet, reliable, and fun to use. best....Peter
marcusperkins Posted September 16, 2009 Share #13 Posted September 16, 2009 I once owned the new version of the M winder. Useful for when using the Noctilux and needed to bracket focus. However, I found the shutter button constantly moving up and down was rather disconcerting, so I go rid of it. Also, the size and weight of the M increased to the point where is was a similar to an SLR.
