Scott Root Posted September 12, 2009 Share #1 Posted September 12, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Do you think Leica will produce a batch of chrome M9 cameras if a bunch of us commit to purchase? I would also like 2 meter framelines and saphire screen.

Maybe if you wait a few months and try their A la Carte option at Leica la carte Wouldn't hold my breath though :-) - Vikas
robofc Posted September 12, 2009 Share #3 Posted September 12, 2009 I too am disappointed about the silver paint. There have been chrome M cameras since 1954 and there is a large market in used chrome lenses. There is a big difference in quality between chromed brass and silver paint. I will wait until a chrome version is released before I buy an M9. Hopefully, Leica will release a chrome version that is not paired with lens I already own or, as is often the case, with a lower spec lens than I own. The special editions are often paired with slower lenses; the MP3 being a notable exception, as it was paired with a superb 50mm summilux.
Scott Root Posted September 12, 2009 Author Share #4 Posted September 12, 2009 I'm on my third chrome m camera going back twenty years, which is to say that my interest in chrome has to do with resistance to wear more than looks. I'll keep shooting my M8 chrome that is giving me great results and will be the first in line, if and when Leica comes out with a chrome M9. And, I hope they offer the option for a saphire screen at that time. My M8 will then become my eldest daugheter's camera who has taken a keen interest in rangerfinder photgraphy by stating every third day,"Papa, can I take the M8 because the pictures turn out better." Whatever is purchaed over the years in our family is communal and never sold, passed onto whoever has interest. So, we purchase irrspective of cost and what is mine is yours and what is yours is mine. Perhaps I've been working in CIS countries too long with a Soviet hangover, figuratively speaking of course. Chrome holds up well over the years, much better than any paint or powder coating irrespective of what they say, so Leica should run a batch.
markgay Posted September 12, 2009 Share #5 Posted September 12, 2009 Well, sitting at the heart of the CIS countries, I feel the same about not selling my cameras. All are kept - or passed to family or given to friends. That's just me. Others in my family constantly upgrade and sell - kidding themselves that they've not lost any money on their upgrade. But having seen my Dad's F3 and 500mm mirror go to dealers - I know he was just keeping them in business My first camera was a rangefinder, a Voightlaender Vito and chrome had nothing to do with looks. It was how cameras were! You could put a ding in them but the chrome covered the worst of it. Black paint started with journalists and became a fashion. Then, for N+C, plastic came along and that was black. It cheers me to see the calls for chrome. Power to the silent majority. Mark (Like me, the Vito has a couple of screws missing but, 35 years on, I still have it.)
Julian Thompson Posted September 13, 2009 Share #6 Posted September 13, 2009 I'd prefer Chrome/Sapphire too - so durable. What will really upset me is if I go ahead and collect my preordered M9 next week and then a few months later a Chrome one becomes available despite the Leica FAQ saying that it won't.... If I knew now it was coming I could make an informed decision. But hey that's life I guess! I suppose we should expect a 9.2 in Chrome only with Sapphire as part of the rationale for its higher price?
thrice Posted September 13, 2009 Share #7 Posted September 13, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Surely one can just send the camera to DAG, get the top & bottom plate removed and sent off to a chromer of your choice then returned to DAG for reassembly? Scott Root Posted September 13, 2009 Author Share #8 Posted September 13, 2009 Perhaps someone such as Sean Reid, who is on a first name basis with the upper management and engineers at Leica, could encourage a run of chrome and the option for saphire screens and 2 meter frames. I've shot m cameras for twenty years and know what I want. I've never asked anything of Sean, so here is a first.

gwelland Posted September 13, 2009 Share #10 Posted September 13, 2009 I'd have selected a chrome M9 if that was an option. I didn't like the black M8 version I had originally and all subsequent M's (film & M8/M8u) have been chrome which I think looks fabulous and definitely seems harder wearing. Black paint looks nice but it's a fine line between when brassing is just ugly wear and when it becomes a desirable patina in my view (if it ever really does of course). I do think that the lack of sapphire glass option is a mistake. I'd have preferred it to be standard, or if an option on the M9 then I'd have ordered it for mine. Scott Root Posted September 13, 2009 Author Share #11 Posted September 13, 2009 To whom should the emailed message be addressed when writing to Leica directly? ..it's a good idea but why don't you write to leica and tell them yourself? it's probable that leica will go the same route with the m9 as they did with the m8/m8.2 and offer a .2 model with saphire glass and other upgrades. this would appear to be their marketing strategy and it sems to work. much of these "upgrades" came about from m-people contacting leica directly or posting here on the forum. i've always preferred chrome myself but i am happy to mix and match chrome/black lenses with chrome/black bodies but it's not to everyone's taste. my point is that m-people preferring chrome as an option for the m9 should contact leica and tell them so en-mass. leica knows chrome has a market, they obviously opted for something quite different seeing the great leap forward the m9 represents for drf's but i really like it all the same
chanyr Posted September 13, 2009 Share #12 Posted September 13, 2009 I like the steel gray colour. Its more discreet than the regular silver colour. I would prefer if it is not a painted on finish. Chrome finishes are much more durable.
albertknappmd Posted September 13, 2009 Share #13 Posted September 13, 2009 I have also always preferred chrome over black given its resistance to wear & tear as well as its innate elegance. Will wait at least a bit and hope from a chrome option. As to the sapphire glass, will just get a piece of clear plastic to protect the LCD....:)
