andrewrossphotographs Posted September 12, 2009 Share #1 Posted September 12, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi I'm unfamiliar with the improvements made by Leica with the M8.2 with regards to auto white balance; but its been suggested that the M9's auto white balance is "as good as the Leica M8.2" I'm wondering if there is consistency in auto white balance between the same frames/shots with the M9 as opposed to the rather frustrating problem of auto white balance showing differences in colour balance across identical frames that was so evident in the original M8 launch camera. Can someone enlighten me with there experience with the M9 and how far Leica has come on the issue?

vikasmg Posted September 12, 2009 Share #2 Posted September 12, 2009 Hi I'm unfamiliar with the improvements made by Leica with the M8.2 with regards to auto white balance; but its been suggested that the M9's auto white balance is "as good as the Leica M8.2" I'm wondering if there is consistency in auto white balance between the same frames/shots with the M9 as opposed to the rather frustrating problem of auto white balance showing differences in colour balance across identical frames that was so evident in the original M8 launch camera. Can someone enlighten me with there experience with the M9 and how far Leica has come on the issue? I'm not sure about the 8.2, but my M8 has had no WB problem after a Firmware update that addressed the problem (I forget the version number). There are always times when manual selection will be better but it's mostly accurate and consistent. So I expect it will also be a non-issue on the M9. - Vikas
andrewrossphotographs Posted September 12, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted September 12, 2009 Thanks again Vikas! I'll just like to be sure that general overall auto white balance is as usable as most DSLR white balance have become, in essence, getting good accuracy in a broad selection of lighting with consistency on a same frame basis, which one has come to expect. Certainly on many editorial assignments, I don't have the "luxury" to correct from initial auto white balance, or the choice of shooting raw over jpg, which makes the auto function of white balance and out of camera jpg quality an essential feature. ho_co Posted September 12, 2009 Share #4 Posted September 12, 2009 I don't have an M9, but everyone quit complaining about M8 AWB after Leica completely reworked the process from scratch and released it in one of the M8 firmware updates as Vikas said. M8.2 and M8 share the same firmware, so they should be the same. I don't think you'll find any difference between M8 and dSLRs so far as AWB is concerned. vikasmg Posted September 12, 2009 Share #5 Posted September 12, 2009 Certainly on many editorial assignments, I don't have the "luxury" to correct from initial auto white balance, or the choice of shooting raw over jpg, which makes the auto function of white balance and out of camera jpg quality an essential feature. After exposing with "Auto" white balance I've tried selecting "Auto" in Lightroom from "As shot" and found very little change and not always for the better. I used to do white balance correction almost as a default action earlier on but now for the most part I don't bother unless there is a specific problem or a specific effect I want. - Vikas
