well here goes.....I´m new to Leica and new to forum posting, so bare with me please. I´ve just bought a M8.2 and cant discribe how much I like it. Its taking some getting used to as i shoot mainly sport on a couple of D3s... Anyway what I would like to know is, can anyone cast a light on using flash on the M8...I would like to use a flash hand held so I can move the flash source quickly depending on the situation. These days I realise that slave triggers are cableless but this is not a real necessity as the flash unit wont go any more than arms length. Can any of you Leica stalwarts give me a pointer which way to go......cheers

Hello there thanks to the starter of this thread. I also have the same question. But if i may ask is it possible to use the nikon sb400 on an m8? Thanks

Hi, sadly the SB400 won't work on the M8, as it is TTL only, and has no manual/auto mode. Any flash that has an external sensor and auto mode, or manual mode only, will work OK though.

Welcome - From my perspective; you have rejected the answer. Cable connection to the camera will work of course [sean Reid was working this way with an inexpensive S/H Vivitar 283 with it's Remote Sensor mounted in the hot shoe], but for my taste dangling cables are really irritating and less conducive to smooth working. I've considered this question myself and I'm in no doubt that I would opt for a wireless 'radio' control of the flash, using the flash set on either manual, or at [say] one or two stops less exposure than the lens aperture. So if the lens is set to f4, the fill-in flash is set to f5.6 or f8 [for example].

Do a search on the subject in the Forum files, it's hardly a new subject and you might find revealing advice.

the sc-17 / 24d mix is huge part of my work. to able to shoot ttl on the quick with a such a small kit is amazing. i carry it with me everywhere i go.

side note: i was forced into this because of the m8's lack of high iso. after shooting with an m6 for years at night with high speed film and the occasional flash i was dumb struck by how bad the high iso on the m8 was but wanted to find a way around it, a way around it that ive not seen much of in recent years. a way to be happy with my new expensive tool. this led to to work off camera and its served me quite well over the last two years.

If your flash can be pointed upwards a Gary Fong diffuser will work well and the flash can remain on the camera. I have tried hand holding but it is a nuisance and some shutter finger skill and holding the camera tight to the face for is required for stability. I'm assuming that you are not in a studio setting where the main and fill flash units can be mounted on stands.

Just another option for your consideration.
