efftee Posted September 9, 2009 Share #21 Posted September 9, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Sorry but can't you read, BLACK PAINT. You're forgiven because you obviously missed the confusing part about 'The black is nearly indistinguishable from black chrome in look and feel'. Advertisement Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 Hi efftee, Take a look here Steel-grey paint finish?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
carstenw Posted September 9, 2009 Share #22 Posted September 9, 2009 My silver chrome M8 got vulcanite in its upgrade, possibly because I had a cameraleather.com leatherette on it.
Shootist Posted September 9, 2009 Share #23 Posted September 9, 2009 You're forgiven because you obviously missed the confusing part about 'The black is nearly indistinguishable from black chrome in look and feel'. Sorry again ( I really don't mean to be so rude), please excuse me. Indistinguihable means it looks and feels like but is NOT chrome. If you simply read most of the posts here and on other forums and read the brochure you would see it is paint.
carstenw Posted September 9, 2009 Share #24 Posted September 9, 2009 Yes, the feel is different than an MP, say. If anyone has used an R9, that is the finish (both grey and black), according to Leica's spokesman at the store.
markgay Posted September 9, 2009 Share #25 Posted September 9, 2009 BTW my dealer said Leica is producing black versus grey in the proportion 2:
AlanJW Posted September 9, 2009 Share #26 Posted September 9, 2009 There are different part numbers for gray handgrip and black handgrip, so it seems they will not all be the same as .M8. I've ordered grey

I've ordered grey The M8.2 hand grip had a different part number, and also the chrome/black version of both, from the one for the M8. The difference is/was the covering on the M8.2 version and the paint on the M8.2 black version. But the underlying grip itself is exactly the same. Englander Posted September 10, 2009 Share #28 Posted September 10, 2009 If the comparison with the R9 steel-gray holds, I would make two observations since aesthetics have been posited as the reason for color/cover combinations: the covering on the steel-gray R9 was much less of the sandpaper of the M8 and more like that of the black M9, so I don’t see that aesthetics demands the sandpaper; and, the gray will scratch or wear to black before it hits anything metallic. My R9 has lots of odd little black scratches wandering around its gray top which I do not consider to be all that aesthetically pleasing. efftee Posted September 10, 2009 Share #29 Posted September 10, 2009 Sorry again ( I really don't mean to be so rude), please excuse me.Indistinguihable means it looks and feels like but is NOT chrome. If you simply read most of the posts here and on other forums and read the brochure you would see it is paint. There are a lot of confusion caused by printed specs and spoken word. There's the thing about the 14 and 16 bit, the X1 made in Solms and Japan, the Ultra II being faster than the Extreme III, etc. I think it's fair for someone, ie me, to ask in spite of what's been said/published here there and everywhere, is it? Bo_Lorentzen Posted September 10, 2009 Share #30 Posted September 10, 2009 Hmm I ordered the grey... might have to order the vulcanite separately if required. .
RockyIII Posted September 11, 2009 Author Share #31 Posted September 11, 2009 Everybody seems to refer to the covering on the original M8 and the M9 grey as "sandpaper." I have only ever had an M8.2 and have not held an M8 or M9. Does the covering just look like sandpaper, or does it actually feel like sandpaper too? I have only ever had an M8.2 and have not held an M8 or M9. Does the covering just look like sandpaper, or does it actually feel like sandpaper too? Rocky Rocky the original M8 covering is the worst ever placed on any Leica camera. It looks like some type of sandpaper but it is almost as smooth as silk. It does not give you a good grip of the camera. I have actually had both of my M8's slip out of my hands with any tug on the strap. Luckily the first time it dropped about 2 feet onto my carpeted living room floor and the other time the strap was around my neck so the camera didn't actually drop onto anything but it did slide out of my hands. I have changed the covering to Camera Leathers Griptac and I have never had the camera slide/slip out of my hand with that covering. Why Leica chose to use this covering for the grey M9 is beyond me. If I was to buy a M9 it certainly would not be the grey model, just becasue of the covering. I like chrome M's better then black but for the M9 I'd buy the black just to get the better covering.
