Simon Baker Posted September 10, 2009 Share #21 Posted September 10, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am seeing a rough £2000 price difference between M8 (what I paid in July) and M9 (today's price) and that is substantial given the actual difference in specification. The M9 does appear to have been priced at a point where it would seem many people are prepared to "put their money where their mouth is" so to speak, so it would appear Leica have got the pricing right. Having said that I here you too and agree, I bought both of my M8 while the £650 rebates were running ( up to Jan this year ) and the "nett" cost to me for each was £2250.00 or £4500.00 for both , on that basis I have two bodies and £350 left in the bank and the M8 is still a great camera so I am very pleased I bought them during that round of rebates. Naturally if I had paid full list price for my M8 's then the difference in price would not have been so great. The M9 may well be the "Holy Grail" many have been waiting for and I sincerely hope it lives up to expectations and along with the S2 helps puts Leica back on a sound financial footing. I think its arrival is wonderful news and yes I'd like one but I will not be an "early adopter", I'll carry on with my love affair with my M8 's as they do everything that "I" need from a RF system. Anyway, congrats to Leica and to all of you who have jumped in, enjoy and LOL Simon
Advertisement Posted September 10, 2009 Posted September 10, 2009 Hi Simon Baker, Take a look here M9 is cheap..... I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
santila Posted September 10, 2009 Share #22 Posted September 10, 2009 Last year when I visited Paris, I have seen on the Champ Elysees a real cashmere sweater for ladies for a mere 15,000.00. Eu. So the M9 is very reasonable. I wouldn’t buy either one, too rich for my blood.
erl Posted September 10, 2009 Share #23 Posted September 10, 2009 I am seeing a rough £2000 price difference between M8 (what I paid in July) and M9 (today's price) and that is substantial given the actual difference in specification. It seems that Leica has however convinced some people that they need to pay for a "Perceived" level of quality, pride of ownership, bragging rights etc. Judging by the various threads here there are people that have a lust to own the M9 that seems to me at least to go beyond simply taking photos.......I also love all that is Leica and have been an affectionado since 30 years but I have just two questions: 1 Will Leica provide firmware upgrades to M8 that address some of the M9 added features? 2 How is all this going to translate positively into the P&L of Leica in 2009 and 2010? On this day of happiness for all Leica fans it would be inappropriate and churlish I guess to ask such questions but the forum is a tough environment! The "perceived" level of quality is in fact a real level of quality. You just have to appreciate exactly where it is. As for the lust bit, where's the problem? See my recent observations in another thread. http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/97907-get-real-3.html#post1029229. To answer your numbered points above. 1. Probably not, but they may. Their choice. 2. You should really address that question to accountants, not photographers. Bottom line is same as ever. To Buy, use and enjoy a Leica, you must make a "Big Splash."
clogwog Posted September 10, 2009 Share #24 Posted September 10, 2009 Not Que?, Rick. Tax (and the way the prices are quoted in different countries). That can't be the reason. Sales tax in Australia is 10% GST. Which makes the camera ex-tax AUD$9045=€5363=GB£4718=USD$7814. It must be the freight cost!?! With cheap airfares around almost worth a short holiday. freecitizen Posted September 10, 2009 Share #25 Posted September 10, 2009 We have been gouged by camera manufacturers here in Australia for years. All the major manufacturers do it. I will be looking to purchase overseas if I don't get a fair go in my country this time.

It comes down to product availability too.
rick_dykstra Posted September 10, 2009 Share #27 Posted September 10, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hoppy, I suugest you walk in, have a good play, then say "Thanks. I'll order mine from overseas." Maybe then we'll start to see some sensible prices. :-)

Maybe then we'll start to see some sensible prices. :-) I totally support that theory but am suspicious of 'real world' warranty when purchased overseas. ie. buy in country 'a' and make warranty claim in countfy 'b'. Probably wouldn't stop me doing it tho'.
