rknewcomb Posted September 4, 2009 Share #1 Posted September 4, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, I'm a very new person around here and although I've shot with Leica film cameras for years, just am now getting a M8,2 Due to cost factors, I've ordered a 28mm f2.8 Biogon for the new camera. I tried to find answers on the older posts but they seem to confuse me more, so please forgive me asking the question that has been asked before. Do I need a IR filter for this non coded Zeiss ZI lens and is there a particular one? I've seen references to IR cutting filters, plain IR filters, slim filters etc. Is one better suited mechanically to the lens I'll be using - lens shade fit and all? The 28/2.8 Biogon on the M8 is IMHO an excellent lens although others will no doubt rush to disagree and say you should go for the Leica equivalent. I used one for quite a while and only reluctantly sold as I needed the money for something wider. If you're going to go mainly B&W then you probably don't really need a UV/IR filter, but for colour it's best to have one. Either a Leica or a B+W will be fine, check the size from the lens leaflet but I believe it's 46mm. I never had mine coded and had no problem using it (with filter) on the "UV/IR filter on" setting on the menu. Hope this helps and look forward to seeing the resultsi n the Photo forums!
