also .... my guess is it will be a fixed 28mm or 35mm (a fixed 24mm is too radical).

On an APS-C sensor 24mm have the FoV of 35mm on 24x36 format. That's pretty good to me. The maximum aperture is conservative (f/2.8), but the camera seem to be a great street shooter!

This X1 looks to be the 2009 digital equivalent of the Leica minilux or CM. I posted a while back (and also here) that I would like to see Leica make a digital version of the minilux or CM. That f2.8 aperture doesn't sound like much at first, but if it has decent high-ISO performance and some kind of image stabilization it should do perfectly well in low light.

I'm in the market for a digi to compliment my film MP and considering the fact that an M9 will cost as much as a small car this X1 just might be what I'm looking for.

I hope it was only a mock up. For many of us looking for a real sucesor for digilux-2 this cam is completly dissapointing. Digital CM? Made in German (absolutly)? Ok For me a looser. I´ll prefer an open minded strategy , good lenses and cams for a reasonable format:m 4/3. It seem´s that Leica goes his own way apart from market. At 2000€: / 2500€ expected price. this is another exclusive Leica product, designed only for for a very exclusive market. I can´t imagine an amateur expending this amount of money in X1 as his only cam..........absurd.

Conclusión: many of us that can´t afford an M8 are still waiting for a versatil Leica cam....an actuliced versión of digilux 2 , preferible with no fixed lens or with one versatil zoom fixed in it...........But no this thing. I finalice like I began: Hope that there was only a mock up. Crossing fingers.

I don't see something like this as intending to be a successor to a Digilux 2 (which is still needed!). This is meant more to be a true Leica compact P&S, set apart from the rebadged Panasonics, in the spirit of the minilux and CM of years past with emphasis on image quality. I certainly hope it does not cost EU2000-2500. That would be a deal breaker for me regardless of performance. If it has a street price of around US$1500 or less it will be a contender in my book, otherwise I will hunt the used market for an M8 and some IR filers.

Only if this camera suddenly grows a viewfinder between now and Wednesday...

Good point, Andy. And adjusting those top-mounted dials while holding the camera at arm's length to compose on the LCD might feel... awkward... to say the least.

At least with the hot shoe an accessory optical 35mm viewfinder would be a viable option. That would be the way I would go if I were to end up with something like this. With no zoom lens and the analog dials for shutter and aperture, I don't see the need for an attachable EVF (i.e. the GF-1).

Fact.

In the new Leica brochure (the PDF was posted on the forum a couple of times today, but quickly taken down) both the M9 (18mpx FF, but otherwise similar to the M8)) and the X1 (a new compact "equipped with a CMOS sensor equal in size to that of many DSLR cameras") are listed.

So, X1 is not factor 2,0 M4/4 neither factor 1,3 M8 sensor size. Its 1,5 - 1,6 factor APS-C? Am I right???

Jaak

Yes, I think so, APS. Although the brief decscription in the brochure didn't actually say that....
