terrycioni Posted November 18, 2006 Share #1 Posted November 18, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Greetings All, Has anyone tried the Rodenstock UV-IR filter on the M8. There certainly has been a good deal of talk about the B+W 486. I have seen the Rodenstock UV-IR filter listed at few Canadian dealers and wondered if it would do equally well on the IR issue of the M8? The filters are made in Germany and the Rodenstock parent is http://www.linos.com Best Regards. Terry.

ho_co Posted November 18, 2006 Share #2 Posted November 18, 2006 Terry-- They sure don't give much info there, do they? I haven't had any experience with their filters, but it's an old German quality brand. I doubt that there are many ways to make an IR/UV cut filter. Take a look at it. From straight on it should look pretty clear to slightly reddish; from a steep angle it will reflect reddish and transmit cyanish. If it does that, it's probably functionally identical to the B+W 486. (That description is based on my Edmund Optics version, which appears to be made by B+W.) Monday Leica is supposed to announce their 'fix,' and by the end of the month they should have their filters on the market. But what you want is a way to cut IR, and this filter says it does that, so if you want to try, it should do what you want optically. Some people have warned that filter mounts might not all fit nicely into the Leica hoods, but I think that's all you need to worry about. It's not the answer you wanted, but I hope it helps. --HC
robsteve Posted November 18, 2006 Share #3 Posted November 18, 2006 Terry: What sizes could you find? I emailed Kindermann, the Rodenstock importer and all they had was 55mm in stock.
terrycioni Posted November 18, 2006 Author Share #4 Posted November 18, 2006 Hi, I nabbed a 67mm UV-IR as I want to use it on a Hexanon M 21/35 dual which has a 62mm filter thread. I will use a step down ring to accommodate the size difference. Howard, thank you for the description - it is exactly how the Rodenstock looks and behaves. I have shot literally hundreds of images with the M8 and have not experienced the IR problem - this is strictly a be prepared effort. I do have some concerns about the auto white balance which sucks frankly but then one could argue AWB is never a good idea. AWB can be fixed and I am sure at some point Solms will address this in firmware. Sofar no green blobs and I have seen a bit of streaking but it was in a very extreme light situation. Overall I am happy with the M8 - work arounds and all - using Leica Ms in this day and age is a work around - why should digital be any different - just an opinion here. I don't intend to buy a bunch of filters for my uncoated Leica lenses or third party M lenses. If necessary I will buy a $7.00 step down ring, of course lens hoods become a problem... Cheers. Terry.
