24mm f/1.4 Summilux-M AP review

I think the review, by Geoffrey Crawley, is only available in the paper magazine. And it was to read that article that I bought a copy.

It's a comparative review of the 24mm f/1.4 Summilux-M (approx £4,245) and a Sigma 24mm f/1.8 (approx £399). Unsurprisingly the Summilux is judged to be better. While Geoffrey Crawley's text is pretty authoritative (as far as I can judge!) the sub-editors have put in a typical Amateur Photographer performance. Under a photo demonstrating the Summilux vignetting it says: "Vignetting is very severe when the lens is used 'wide open' at f/1.4, but by f/11 it has significantly reduced." So that's all right then! Having spent £4,245 I'll use it at f/11. Anyway, what Geoffrey Crawley's text actually says is "vignetting is noticeable .... requiring f/2.8 to reduce to practical unimportance. Further stopping down has little effect." And the photo which is, according to the sub-editor's caption, demonstrating that "the limited depth of field at f/1.4 means that it is possible to isolate scene elements effectively" demonstrates nothing of the kind.

I sometimes hanker after the days when AP used to photograph that boat across the river. I think it's still there...
