adan Posted November 17, 2006 Share #7 Posted November 17, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) The 15 C/V on the original Bessa L was the combo that absolutely hooked me on non-SLR "viewfinder" photography. I'm glad I kept mine around for the M8 - now I just wish the body would arrive. Compared to Leica lenses it is really sharp, but a tad lower in contrast and saturation - although that is easy to fix, as Neal's shots show. Erl - this is what Leica's offset microlenses and extra thin IR filter do for wide-angle lenses - at the expense of the occasional IR bobble, as we all know. Vignetting for my 15 and 21 is lower straight from the M8 than it is from the same lenses on film. (Obviously cropping the corners 1.33x on the sensor helps, too.). The brook shot has been darkened a bit with a slight increase in contrast. I used the 21CV finder. I ordered and paid for the first Chrome one that came into our shop, since noone else ordered or paid for a chrome M8 when it came in it was mine, we're still waiting for the first black one which is also sold. In the digital world it may be possible to chimp enough to get a feel for the field of view. I know if I am in a hurry, I wouldn't hesitate to forgo the viewfinder, shoot first, and then review the framing (I normally review the histogram anyway). I was late in making the decision to purchase a M8 and had not pre-ordered. I called a Leica dealer in a city which I would be traveling to for business the following week to inquire about their selection of new and used M lenses. If he had much M lens inventory, I was going to stop by and get a feel for their various physical sizes. I was shocked when the dealer infomed me that he had 1 black M8 body inbound and no firm buyer (this was about 4 days before it was scheduled to arrive). I didn't expect that, but immediately gave him a deposit and picked up the M8 and a new 28 f2.8 ASPH when I got there a few days later. That was the only dealer I called - I was very lucky. The timing was great, because I also had a NYC trip scheduled for later that week. The M8 is the perfect camera for NYC. Southeastern Camera in Cary, North Carolina is where my Leica money pit started. It was a costly mistake for me to subscribe to Sean's review site and spend so much time pooring over the other reviews at LL, DPR, and Outback. After seeing what this camera can do in such a small package, I knew I had to have one. In all fairness to Sean, I will credit him in saving me some money in the begining by having sample shots/reviews of the CV15 and CV50 Nokton. I will probably end up with a Leica 50 f1.4 ASPH before long, but the CV glass is a great way to test the waters without breaking the bank. Of course the bank wasn't safe for long because I just had to buy a Leica 90 f2 APO/APSH and veiwfinder magnifier from Tamarkin while in NYC. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

geoff Posted November 17, 2006 Share #19 Posted November 17, 2006 I also picked up a CV15 with my M8s. I have a CV12 on order. The CV15 veiwfinder will be use for the CV12/M8 combination. Additionally, since it's only about an extra $200 to get the CV21 w/viefinder over the price of the CV21 viewfinder alone, I'm thinking of picking up both. Then the CV21 viewfinder would be used for the CV15 on the M8. I already have a Leica 28 viewfinder to cover the CV21. BTW, I was really surprised at the quality I got with the CV15 on the M8 and I saw no signs of vignetting. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

You would need the external 21 viewfinder to really see the correct field of view and accurately frame the shot. The M8 viewfinder is not large enough.
