M8 file transfer question

I didn't know where to post this question so I had to start a new thread. I have the M8 and am running windows xp pro with all updates on a pentium core 2 duo. How can one get the files off of the camera without using a card reader? I can access the card in 'my computer' as the M8 shows up there. However, as has been discussed in the range finder forum, the jpg's do not show up, and the dng files are labeled as tiffs. If I select them and put them on my desktop there are 2 copies of every picture, and both are the same 10.3mp size. I am used to being able to transfer the files via usb from all the other cameras I have owned, and there was no problem. Leicas own literature states the files can be transfered via the usb connection but I can't seem to be able to do it and get the jpg files. I shoot raw +jpg, and of course both files are on the card when I use my card reader. There are times when I simply don't want to remove the bottom plate and put the card in a reader and at times would like to transfer the files to someone else's computer when I am not at home. It seems the only real use the usb has is in 'tethered' mode. Do I possibly have some piece of software on my computer that is screwing this up, or is this normal.

I have no idea about Windows, but maybe it's the same as on the Mac. I can also not grab the pictures directly. I have to use an app which understands the protocol. Lightroom can import directly from the camera, as can some other apps.

Have you set the M8 so that it is seen as a disk and not as a camera?

It will be in the menu somewhere, if it's the same as a DMR. If it is set this way, it will appear as any normal external disk on the Mac desktop.

If you are using Windows, you will have to do that My Computer/drop down menu thing to see the drive.

I dont think the M8 has the capability to appear as an USB storage device, it differs from DMR in this respect.

Given that the USB cover on the M8 appears to be a little fiddly, and that many repeated insertions and removals of a USB cable may eventually cause the connector to fail, the best bet is to use a card reader.

That's interesting. I know it can be used tethered to a computer with the image being displayed instantly on the screen.

It's probably because the DMR is a FireWire device and not a USB that's the reason.

Thanks for the info.

That kind of defeats the purpose, doesn't it?

Thank you gentlemen, but it just doesn't work. Yes, I have installed the tethered software, and I can successfully use it and the pictures transfer to my computer. As has been pointed out, the M8 has no item appearing in its menu as apparently the dmr has. I can see the camera in 'my computer' as I mentioned, but can't see jpg files. Yes, I know I can use my card reader, but that is not the point. This same question on the rangefinder forum just ended and was never answered. What I am really trying to find out is if anyone has ever been successfull in transfering the jpg from their camera. If I know it can be done I can investigate why I cannot. Otherwise I am trying to fix something that can't be fixed. Thanks.

I am not so sure that removing the bottom plate every time, and the SD card, is exactly such a wonderful idea either.

Well, you could always leave the pictures in the camera :) I've bought a card reader. If I shoot 4 cards full, I am not going to stick each one of them back in the camera to get the pictures off. The same if I only shoot one picture. It is probably faster to remove the bottom of the camera than getting that USB flap open anyway. The thing is stubborn!

Yes, as I said I have a card reader that works just as it should. My question is simply on the rare occassion that I want to read directly from the camera, why can I not do this. According to many reviews, and Leicas manual, it says one can do this with 'fast usb 2.0 transfer'. Well, I can't. And, it seems, no can anyone else.

I just got rid of my 5d, and had a 10d and 20d previous to that. I didn't have a problem getting the files off of any of the canons, unless I don't remember correctly. I have dealt with so many cameras recently that I am not sure, but I think the 5d had the ability to select the usb useage in the in camera menu. The card was so much easier to remove I didn't use usb often.

For those who have an Express34 card slot, Belkin now has their multimedia reader/writer card back in stock - I have been checking their website for ages waiting for this, and mine turned up yesterday. No driver required, it just slides into the slot on the side of my MacBook Pro, just like a smaller PCMCIA card. Now I can just put an SD card in and out without carrying an external reader and cable, and it mounts on my desktop as an extra drive.

Chet,

I am experienceing the same problem. The ".tif" files work as DNG fiels in both Capture One and Photoshop.

Let's keep this thread alive, as it is important to have the feture of being able to read directly out of the camera.

Yes, they do. But why are there two of every picture, and both files are 10mb in size. Also, they can't be opened in microsoft viewer as can regular tiff files. They are only thumbnails, and have 320x240 resolution. Either can be opened in photoshop or c1 and can then be operated on as regular dng files. The jpg is nowhere to be found!

I have been having other intermittent problems with files. Check out this file. This is a jpeg straight off the card and reduced in PS.

Who knows what happened. Now we have a camera that shoots in negative and double exposure!!Another feature no other camera has!!

I have also had DNG files partially imaged. I think that is my fault in that I turned the camera off too soon. But one would think that the camera would be smart enough not to turn off before it is done writing to the card.
