Just talked to two Leica dealers in Toronto and Montreal.

Dealer in Toronto says that most likely there will be no M9 product announcement in September. If there will be announcement it will be only info and the camera will be available at lest year later.

Dealer from Montreal said that there will be no FF M camera. Whatever it will be it will not be FF and will be available in late 2010 or 2011.

Both of them are long time reputable Leica dealers in Canada.

Could easily be a rebadged Panasonic GF1 in September. And yes, I know Leica said they weren't interested in micro four thirds - (a) Leica say a lot of things, not all of which turn out to be true, and (B) given how ugly their balance sheet looks, I'd say anything that will generate cash flow would be welcome right now. And the GF1 has Leica badged lenses.

Just what do you expect stocking dealers, that actually have M8/.2 cameras in stock, to say. "Don't buy a M8/.2 because the M9 is coming right around the corner".

They're just hoping to sell off ther current stock.

But would it? Leica would have to agree to take a certain number of bodies, and if the D3 didn't sell well they may not want to get their fingers burnt again.

I talked to a Leica dealer here in Oslo on Saturday who was of the same opinion; a M9 mock-up is the best that will be shown on the 9.9.09. It will be another year before it can be bought in the shops.

You know this statement isn't really true. The M digital exists now. What would it take to put in a newer, better high ISO and more MP's, sensor, better electronics, better LCD screen, some more buttons for different functions and the big thing write a new firmware to run all of it.

They have the case/body, they have the rangefinder, they have the switches, they have the lens mount.

Only 30 days to go... and we will know.

Anyone interested in betting?

My bet:

07/09/09 all official Leica dealers officially informed. Some of them will meet and be able to see, touch and maybe leave meeting with an M9

09/09/09 official presentation to the world

October, M9 starts to be available at Leica dealer.

I put a 10 US$ bet

_If_ there's an M9 announcement on the 9th, and _if_ it's only 500 Euros more than the M8.2, I'd expect the dealers already know. Otherwise they'd run the risk of ordering M8 in the next month and then have them sat on a shelf unable to be sold, and I can't imagine they'd be overjoyed at having unsaleable stock on their shelves.

Price of M9.... close to 6000 Euros including tax, so nothing to worry about. Really two different products. M8.2 and M9, does de Nikon D300 compete with the D3, Not really, does it?

egibaud,

Since Leica HAVE a digital M out already, clearly the official announcemet of the next one will cannibalize the current sales.

So, I do agree on one thing for sure, once they announce it, it probably will be in stores faster than a few years, because the don't want to halt sales in the waiting period.

my best bet / guess is:

Upgraded sensor (a little more MPs) with a pretty much same crop factor (no FF, Jose).

No IR filter needed on lenses.

Better high ISO performance

Some additional extermal buttoms / dials (ISO, etc)

Upgradable from M8x (starting in Jan 10)

10USD on this.

My bet would be to expect an announcement only - no actual camera to buy until 2010.

How about 16MP, 1.1x crop factor, better high iso (but not as good as we'd like), liveview and in body IS to attract more new customers plus expansion of the 'S' mode as on the 8.2. No IR issue fix.

Perhaps 2 prices like the S2 - one with sapphire LCD and 'better' customer service.

We shall soon see!

If we're not totally off, and this announcement is just a rebadged micro-four thirds camera or something else non-M, this seems most likely based on price info we've heard.

Wouldn't expect upgrades being available though.

The French dealer mentioned elsewhere has the M8.2 at 4995 Euros, and the M9 at 5500. Who wouldn't be prepared to pay the extra 500 Eutos if you were spending that much anyway?

Now, the price may not be set in stone, but that's what that dealer is expecting to charge.

At the risk of annoying Pascal <grin>, here's the link...

OBJECTIF BOETIE Spécialiste Leica, Nikon, Canon

The French magazine Chasseur d'Images also had a snippet saying that the M9 would be announced on the 9th. I don't have the magazine in this room, so I can't say whether they said just announced or released.

Dealers who signed NDA will be informed of new product very, very shortly. Whether dat be M9 or not is unclear.

M8 and the M9 will have a difference in price much greater than $500, more like 100% increase. Forget other variations; they history dude.

Well whatever, If this apparition does appear and it is not FF then great, I will save my money.... cos I wont be buying it. The only other thing I would love is live view and I,ll bet my house it wont have that. Better ISO thats great but it wont tempt me.
