Peter Duminy Posted August 8, 2009 Share #1 Posted August 8, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just picked up a brand new pair of Leica Ultravid 8x42 BR binoculars today. Yes they are expensive, but oh, the clarity and color is awesome! Makes a perfect mate to my two D-Lu4 Titans for nature and sport shots.
Advertisement Posted August 8, 2009 Posted August 8, 2009 Hi Peter Duminy, Take a look here Just bought Leica Ultravid Binoculars.. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Chuck Albertson Posted August 10, 2009 Share #2 Posted August 10, 2009 Are they the new Ultravid HD binos? I bought a part of 8x32 Ultravids when they were first introduced a few years back, and they're phenomenal. If I loan them to someone at a ballgame, I usually have to wrestle them back. The new HD models are supposed to be even better, and for the price they should be.
Peter Duminy Posted August 12, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted August 12, 2009 Hi Chuck, No, they don't say HD. They are the model 40261. They are brand new as the box was sealed. What amazes me is when you are looking through them, is that there is no loss of brightness or contrast. They don't look like lenses. Rather, it looks like you just moved closer to the subject. Have yours been reliable?.....
Chuck Albertson Posted August 12, 2009 Share #4 Posted August 12, 2009 Have yours been reliable?..... No problems. Very rugged, and light enough that they can hang around my neck for hours without being a bother. They get used a lot as a result.
aesop Posted August 12, 2009 Share #5 Posted August 12, 2009 Have yours been reliable?..... ...can't comment on the 8 X 42, but I have used my Ultravid 10 X 25 BR relentlessly for 3 years - mostly in hot, wet, humid, tropical weather. Make no mistake, these are rugged binoculars with a fully functional design, stunning optics and unbelievable build quality. To cap it all, they are extremely compact. And yes, they are utterly reliable. .
Pangur Ban Posted August 12, 2009 Share #6 Posted August 12, 2009 I bought a pair of 8x42 for a safari in Kenya a couple of years back and adore them. They're incredible at dusk and after dark for picking out things I can't see without them. Amazing clarity and vision. I use my pair on my sailboat - with the orange floating strap of course - and they're great marine binos too. Well worth the money as I'll never have to buy another pair in my lifetime. mooky Posted August 12, 2009 Share #7 Posted August 12, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I sell Leica Sport Optics and they are the best you can buy. When I want to illustrate the importance in contrast resolving a point of detail, I show customers the Leicas. They lead through resolution, contrast (extremely important in low light conditions), ruggedness, and what I sometimes call, 'spacial image rendering' - the way the depth of the subject is imaged. We also sell many other brands including Zeiss (a little 'warm'), Swarovski (over-rated and not as contrasty as Leica or Zeiss or as rugged), Nikons, Leupold (probably the best value for under $1000.00 and very nice contrast), and others. It's always fun to hear the comments from customers when they look through the Leicas - a combination of joy mixed with amazement. I've totally abused mine for years (not proud of it) as I worked in Natural Resource Fields and they just are a joy.
rick_dykstra Posted August 12, 2009 Share #8 Posted August 12, 2009 For me it was the other way around. I'd been aware of Leica binoculars for a few years as a young worker fresh out of uni. Every now and then I'd look through a pair in one Melbourne shop or another. The quality of the optics haunted me. With my career underway I felt financially ready to lay down the money for a new pair of 10 x 50 Trinovids. What a day that was. Around that time I remember being asked, "Are you interested in Photography? You are! Well we need to show you the Leica cameras." Ha! Great products that suit my way of looking at things perfectly. santila Posted August 13, 2009 Share #13 Posted August 13, 2009 The Leica binocs are is this family of order: Trinovid. BR, Ultravid and the latest Ultravid HD. They all are excellent glass, the Ultravids are more contrasty then the glassess before them and hardly any difference between the Ultravid and Ultravid HD. I have a Trinovid 6x24, Ultravid 7x42 and a Zeiss Dialyt 7x42B. I prefer the Ultravid 7x42, given price-performance ratio.
Peter Duminy Posted August 15, 2009 Author Share #14 Posted August 15, 2009 Thanks for the positive feedback folks! It sure looks like I made a wise investment. I am curious, what is difference between the ones I have and the newer HD version? Are mine out of production now? ....
santila Posted August 16, 2009 Share #15 Posted August 16, 2009 Yes, yours is out of production. No more good, trow it away and let me know where. Just kidding. Don't worry enjoy you have one of the best. The HD glass is rain repellent and about $1000 USD more.
