35mmSummicron Posted August 1, 2009 Share #1 Posted August 1, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just took a lovely spill on my bike with my M8 and newly aquired 50mm 1.4 Summilux ASPH. Both seem fine optically, but there's a ding in the hood so now it won't retract. Its a long weekend here in Canada, does anyone know approximately how much it costs to get the retractable hood replaced? sucks......

delander † Posted August 1, 2009 Share #2 Posted August 1, 2009 Do you have passport warranty on the lens in Canada, it covers accidental damage. Jeff
adan Posted August 1, 2009 Share #3 Posted August 1, 2009 Ugh! Was it bought new from Leica? It should be covered under no-fault passport warranty (although I don't know if that applies in Canada or not). Regardless, if bought new from Leica, it may be possible they'll do it free. Leica is weird about sometimes being generous on repairs and sometimes not. If bought used or otherwise not covered, I would expect it to be around $200 +/- (US or Can), unless they find internal injuries you didn't see. 35mmSummicron Posted August 1, 2009 Author Share #4 Posted August 1, 2009 The lens was purchased used, and it was pretty much in mint condition until now. If its just about $200 I think I'm ok with that....no need for insurance claims. I hope Kinderman can take care of it and I don't have to send it away....... thanks, andy
Shootist Posted August 1, 2009 Share #5 Posted August 1, 2009 It's a relatively simple part to change. On the front of the lens there is a stop collar that holds the hood on. Once that is unscrewed the hood just slips off. Any competent Leica repair person should have no problem doing it. Now we have the cost and availability of the hood which could be more then $200US and take several months to get. Then again it might be readily available. Myself, not a collector and I think the 50Lux ASPH would be the last piece of Leica gear I'd ever sell, I'd push the dent out, somehow, and just use the lens as is. As long as it's still optically good and focuses correctly.
